About The Customer
The Tokyo Institute of Technology, also known as Tokyo Tech, is Japan’s top national science and technology university with a history dating back over 130 years. The university has an enrollment of approximately 10,000 students, with 5,000 in undergraduate programs and 5,000 in graduate school programs, studying on its three campuses. Tokyo Tech prides itself on its technological advancement and advocates the sharing of data using its always available IT infrastructure. The university’s supercomputer, TSUBAME, is used by undergraduate students for science and technology research. The university’s faculty, administrative, and technical staff run close to 400 websites in addition to the university’s own official website.
The Challenge
The Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan’s leading science and technology university, was facing significant security threats to the content of nearly 400 websites operated by its on-campus hosting service. The university's Global Scientific Information and Computing Center (GSIC) department, responsible for managing and maintaining the institute’s IT environments, was under constant attack. With limited security professional resources within the department, the university was in dire need of a robust, easy-to-deploy solution that could effectively protect their web content. The challenge was further compounded by the extensive incident response workload of the security management team and the limited human resources of the security operation team.
The Solution
Tokyo Tech adopted the SecureSphere Web Application Firewall (WAF) to enhance and simplify its operations. This solution was chosen for its ability to offer guaranteed protection for a large volume of web content while being easy to deploy and operate. The SecureSphere WAF provided detailed alert messages that allowed Tokyo Tech to immediately and accurately grasp the current security status. It also enabled the prioritization of incident responses, allowing the team to focus on incidents with the highest urgency. Furthermore, SecureSphere was able to block major security threats with limited effort, greatly reducing the workload of the security team.
