About The Customer
Tokio Marine HCC (TMHCC) is a leading multinational provider of specialty insurance, underwriting more than 100 classes of specialty insurance offerings, including liability, casualty, travel, and property insurance. Operating in around 180 countries globally, TMHCC has deep expertise in risk management and provides business-critical solutions to a wide range of customers, including those in the marine and aviation industries. The company is committed to delivering the best user experience and managing data residency and portability as part of its digital transformation initiatives. Led by Shruthi Anantharamu, Senior DevSecOps & Cloud Solutions Architect, TMHCC is focused on leveraging cloud technologies to enhance its operations and service delivery.
The Challenge
Tokio Marine HCC (TMHCC) faced the challenge of delivering the best user experience while managing data residency and portability during their digital transformation. With a growing global footprint, they needed to control costs and ensure full visibility across their complex distributed systems. The decision was made to build out microservices from their legacy monolithic application, containerize their applications, and host them in Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS). They also moved from SQL Server to PostgreSQL and from Windows to Linux servers to mitigate future licensing costs. A critical part of their migration strategy was finding a solution that would provide full visibility across the entirety of their applications, supporting AWS CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and API gateway logs and metrics, while operating within their security guidelines for AWS management across different regions and groups.
The Solution
TMHCC chose the Sumo Logic Continuous Intelligence Platform™ to meet their observability challenges during cloud migration. Sumo Logic was selected for its ability to collect and manage all telemetry data as TMHCC moved from VMs to AWS. The platform supports effortless analysis of log data at cloud-scale and provides actionable insights via out-of-the-box and custom data visualization. Sumo Logic's CloudFormation template and API subscription filter simplified the process of collecting logs and metrics data from EKS containers and API gateways. The platform enabled TMHCC to aggregate AWS CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and API gateway logs, metrics, and traces for their application operations, developer, and infrastructure groups, across production and non-production environments. Additionally, Sumo Logic's security features, including data encryption in transit and at rest, and role-based access controls, ensured that TMHCC could meet their org-wide security requirements. The platform also supported faster deployment for TMHCC's multi-account, multi-region CI/CD pipelines, reducing cross-region latency and improving business outcomes.
Operational Impact
  • TMHCC now has the visibility and insights to keep microservices running smoothly, with simplified log and metrics data collection from EKS containers and API gateways.
  • Sumo Logic's ability to centralize all log data from EKS containers and APIs, along with custom dashboards and incisive queries, enabled TMHCC to reclaim time lost in triaging alerts, supporting business units globally.
  • Security confidence was enhanced with Sumo Logic's data encryption in transit and at rest, and role-based access controls, meeting TMHCC's org-wide security requirements.
  • Faster deployment for TMHCC's multi-account, multi-region CI/CD pipelines was achieved, reducing cross-region latency and improving business outcomes.
  • Efficient observability led to shorter turnarounds for feature development and a marked lift in lead generation, meeting the performance guidelines of price aggregators in the travel insurance industry.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced cross-region latency from seven seconds to sub-second.
  • Faster deployment for multi-account, multi-region CI/CD pipelines.
  • Shorter turnarounds for feature development.
