With 43 customer sites and 5400 employees, ThedaCare is committed to improving healthcare value for its employer plan purchasers and 225,000 patients annually. The healthcare provider was using SAP Crystal Reports for its reporting needs but was facing challenges as the volume of data was outgrowing the existing reporting systems. The existing systems were not user-friendly and ad hoc requests required IT intervention, which could take days to answer business and clinical questions.
The Challenge
ThedaCare, the largest healthcare provider and employer in Northeast Wisconsin, was facing challenges with its existing reporting systems. The systems were becoming cumbersome and not user-friendly. Ad hoc requests required end users to have IT develop the report. The process could take days to answer business and clinical questions—a situation worsening with increasing data volume. With 43 customer sites, 5400 employees and a commitment to improve healthcare value for its employer plan purchasers and 225,000 patients annually, ThedaCare needed to upgrade its reporting tools—but not at the high capital investment in server hardware and software licenses that its existing dependence on SAP Crystal Reports would require.
The Solution
ThedaCare deployed QlikView to 1,200 business and clinical users with initial applications to 60 users in less than 60 days. With QlikView, ThedaCare now analyzes financial performance, disease management, patient care, and the quality and availability of services—all focused on improving healthcare value for employer plan purchasers and patients. With QlikView Version 9 Enterprise 64-bit Edition and QlikView Publisher, ThedaCare analyzes 110 million rows of data each day from Electronic Record Management (EMR), patient management, finance, call center and time card systems. QlikView users today at ThedaCare analyze 110 million rows of data each day from the healthcare provider’s EpicElectronic Medical Record (EMR) and practice management systems, Lawson ERP, API time management, Nortel Symposium phone center and a disease registry warehouse built on Microsoft SQL Server.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
