About The Customer
Teck Cominco Limited is a diversified mining company, headquartered in Vancouver, BC, Canada with revenue totaling approximately $7 billion. The company is a world leader in the production of zinc and metallurgical coal and is also a major producer of copper and gold. Five percent of the Western world’s zinc and 2 percent of its lead are produced by Teck Cominco. The company employs an ERP solution comprised of JD Edwards, Process Data Historian (PDH) and EtQ systems to store its wealth of transactional data. It is imperative that management at Teck Cominco have reliable and timely access to this data to ensure proactive rather than reactive business decisions.
The Challenge
Teck Cominco Limited, a diversified mining company, needed a platform for turning large volumes of transactional data into usable business information. The company's ERP solution met all of management’s data capture requirements, but its cumbersome reporting capabilities proved inhibitive to providing the key performance indicator (KPI) information necessary for quickly recognizing trends and driving improvements. Temporary, Excel-based systems were implemented to deliver KPI data to management. These unsustainable, labor-intensive systems required IT managers to dedicate one day per month to prepare and distribute reports for process capability and maintenance KPI reviews. The reports provided only static views of information with a narrow focus on a single topic from a single subject area. Access to and value of overall information needed to be significantly and quickly improved.
The Solution
Teck Cominco deployed QlikView to roughly 70 employees across 3 functional areas and had its first application up and running in 2 weeks. With QlikView pulling data from JD Edwards, Lotus Domino, Excel and various other sources running on IBM System i (AS/400), Teck Cominco analyzes operations, finance and human resources information – all with a focus on reducing costs and improving overall corporate performance. With QlikView Server, Teck Cominco employees work from a single version of the truth through a common dashboard. Several additional customized applications have since been deployed to track and analyze business data related to health and safety, training compliance, cost control, labor, production, in-process and final product quality and environmental compliance. Additionally, QlikView allows Trail Operations managers to keep a close watch on their key cost drivers and business unit managers are able to quickly assess the performance of their areas.
