About The Customer
The University of Melbourne, located in Australia, is a prestigious institution known for its strong emphasis on research and education. Joshua Heazlewood, Ph.D., an Associate Professor at the university, has been instrumental in revamping the Advanced Molecular Biology Techniques course. He joined the university in 2013 as an ARC Future Fellow at the School of Botany. The university aims to empower its students with the tools and knowledge to excel in synthetic biology, preparing them for future scientific endeavors.
The Challenge
The University of Melbourne faced significant challenges in providing an immersive molecular biology experience without a lab. The existing course on Advanced Molecular Biology Techniques had become stale and unengaging, leading to low student interest. Additionally, there was a lack of user-friendly tools for students to learn and apply synthetic biology effectively. Teaching the course and its techniques to all students in a semester was also a logistical challenge.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Joshua Heazlewood partnered with TeselaGen in 2018. TeselaGen provided a cloud-based software platform that allowed students to simulate molecular biology workflows. Each semester, students were given access to this platform and engaged in a 3 to 4-hour workshop where they implemented various experimental workflows. These included promoter bashing tests, cost and pricing calculations for DNA material, and assays based on fluorescence from a GFP reporter protein. The collaboration allowed students to immerse themselves in real-world aspects of synthetic biology, leveraging TeselaGen's state-of-the-art software. TeselaGen also benefited from feedback provided by students as first-time users, helping to refine and improve their platform.
Operational Impact
  • TeselaGen provided an intuitive platform for students to implement their experimental workflows, making the learning process more engaging.
  • The course achieved 100% student adoption for the past four years, indicating high levels of student satisfaction and engagement.
  • A total of 363 students have used the TeselaGen platform to date, showcasing the scalability and effectiveness of the solution.
  • 9 out of 10 students found TeselaGen very useful, highlighting the platform's impact on enhancing the learning experience.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 100% student adoption for the past 4 years.
  • 363 students have used the TeselaGen platform up to date.
  • 9/10 of the students found TeselaGen very useful.
