About The Customer
Synernet is an outsourced provider of administrative services for the healthcare industry. The company was struggling with its legacy IT implementation, which was a mix of HP servers and capacity-constrained Dell EqualLogic storage arrays. This setup was proving to be too costly and complex to maintain and scale. Expanding capacity, introducing new applications, or troubleshooting problems was a time-consuming, error-prone process involving a number of distinct, low-level administrative interfaces. Furthermore, the company was unable to achieve its disaster recovery objectives with its unidirectional data replication solution. Once services failed over to the DR site, Synernet could not effectively revert back to the primary production site.
The Challenge
Synernet’s legacy IT implementation—a mix of HP servers and capacity-constrained Dell EqualLogic storage arrays—was too costly and complex to maintain and scale. Expanding capacity, introducing new applications or troubleshooting problems was a time consuming, error-prone process involving a number of distinct, low-level administrative interfaces. And to make matters worse the company was unable to achieve its disaster recovery objectives with its unidirectional data replication solution; once services failed over to the DR site, Synernet could not effectively revert back to the primary production site.
The Solution
After evaluating potential replacement options from Nutanix and Scale Computing, Michael Michaud, Synernet’s Senior IT Director, selected SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure for the company’s next-generation IT implementation. “SimpliVity’s inherent data protection, dedupe and compression capabilities were key,” says Michaud. With SimpliVity we can failover and failback between data centers, and move workloads across sites quickly and reliably.” Synernet deployed three SimpliVity nodes in its primary data center in Portland, ME and two SimpliVity nodes in a secondary data center in Brunswick, ME eliminating IT sprawl and administrative complexity. SimpliVity’s VM-centric management interface simplifies operations and accelerates IT service agility. IT generalists—without any special training or storage expertise—can clone, move, backup and restore VMs in seconds with two or three mouse clicks.
Operational Impact
  • Efficient and reliable DR; backup and restore VMs across data centers in minutes with no data loss
  • Increased IT service agility; clone VMs and migrate workloads across sites in seconds
  • Simplified administration; IT generalists manage environment using familiar vCenter console
  • Cost avoidance; no SAN experts or outside consultants required
  • Low OPEX; bandwidth and connectivity savings between data centers; VMware licensing, power and cooling savings through consolidation
