About The Customer
Sean “Sully” Sullivan is a renowned sound mixer who has worked with some of the world’s biggest artists, including Beck, Rihanna, the Beastie Boys, and Atoms for Peace. He is known for his expertise in live sound mixing and his ability to adapt to different systems and technologies. For the Red Hot Chili Peppers' World Tour, Sully was tasked with the challenge of mixing the live sound, a task that required him to transition to a new system and decide on the best plugins to use. Despite the challenges, Sully was able to successfully navigate the transition and deliver a high-quality sound mix for the tour.
The Challenge
Sean “Sully” Sullivan, a renowned sound mixer for some of the world’s biggest artists, was tasked with the challenge of mixing the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s World Tour. Having previously used Avid VENUE consoles, Sully was in search of the next stage in live sound. The challenge was not only to transition to a new system but also to decide which plugins to use. Sully was fond of using Waves, but the external nature of the SoundGrid MultiRack option was not appealing. He also had to overcome the muscle memory of where buttons are and how to use them on the new console. The transition was further complicated by the fact that the Red Hot Chili Peppers had previously been mixed on an analog board, and Sully had to adapt to this change.
The Solution
Sully turned to the Avid VENUE | S6L system for the Chili Peppers' tour. He borrowed one from Eighth Day Sound, a vendor he had been using, and used it for rehearsals and one-off gigs. He split the inputs to the S6L to get recordings with the Stage 64 rack. Sully spent a month in his studio with the console to get his show dialed. He used the console and Pro Tools to prepare for the tour, learning the basics of layouts, how to navigate internal plugins, and locating the fine/config/undo/layer buttons. He also made changes to the mics, most notably on the drum kit. Sully also explored third-party AAX DSP plugins, using some Waves plugins and finding replacements for others. He used the console’s built-in channel dynamics and a variety of other plugins for saturation and vintage EQs.
Operational Impact
  • The transition to the Avid VENUE | S6L system was successful, with Sully able to adapt to the new console and decide on the best plugins to use. He was able to spend a month in his studio with the console, learning the basics and preparing for the tour. The use of the console and Pro Tools allowed him to prepare for the tour in a way that would not have been possible with other systems. The changes he made to the mics, particularly on the drum kit, improved the sound quality. The use of third-party AAX DSP plugins, including some from Waves, allowed him to achieve the sound he wanted. Overall, the transition to the Avid VENUE | S6L system was a success, allowing Sully to deliver a high-quality sound mix for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' World Tour.
