About The Customer
EAB partners with colleges and universities, K-12 schools, and more than 450 major corporations to digitally transform student enrollment and success, data analytics, institutional strategy development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. They operate within a complex ecosystem and handle sensitive information in the cloud. EAB is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and is dedicated to improving access to education through secure and equitable means. Their mission involves not only protecting their own organization but also assisting their partners in maintaining robust security measures.
The Challenge
EAB needed a robust cloud security solution to protect their organization and clients from phishing, business email compromise (BEC), and vendor compromise. They sought an additional layer of security to complement Microsoft 365’s built-in email protection. The goal was to protect their cloud-based email ecosystem from advanced threats, help education partners with less robust security identify and address threats, and free executives and IT teams to focus on other value-creation initiatives to support their mission.
The Solution
EAB implemented Abnormal Security’s cloud security solution to protect against phishing, BEC, and vendor compromise. The solution was integrated via a quick API setup, allowing it to collect data for two weeks. The behavioral AI technology from Abnormal detected numerous threats, providing a level of security that impressed EAB’s CFO. The solution also included VendorBase™, which identifies compromised vendors and provides visibility through the Abnormal dashboard. This allows EAB to report compromised .edu accounts to the appropriate parties, enhancing the overall security of the education ecosystem.
Operational Impact
  • The API-based, behavioral AI-driven solution identified many threats that would have otherwise reached end users’ mailboxes.
  • Malicious emails and scams were stopped from reaching EAB’s customers, saving time and resources.
  • VendorBase™ allows EAB to alert partners and vendors when their email accounts are compromised, improving overall security.
  • EAB has more time to focus on expanding access to education instead of manual email investigations and remediation.
  • The visibility provided by the Abnormal dashboard helps EAB proactively manage and report security threats.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Protected 3,389 mailboxes from advanced threats.
