NEXX Systems, Inc. specializes in products designed for the advanced wafer-level packaging market, supporting a wide range of deposition applications for smaller, faster electronic devices. The company has been using SolidWorks® 3D CAD software since its inception. As NEXX Systems grew, it generated increasing amounts of 3D assembly and component design data, necessitating a more efficient and accurate data management system. The company needed to handle greater development activity and related engineering change orders (ECOs) more efficiently.
The Challenge
NEXX Systems, Inc. faced challenges in managing the increasing volume of 3D assembly and component design data due to its growth. Traditional file management techniques were insufficient, leading to slow, error-prone processes and a backlog of engineering change orders (ECOs). The company needed improved efficiency, accuracy, and control in handling its design data and ECOs. They began researching available product data management (PDM) systems to address these issues.
The Solution
NEXX Systems selected SolidWorks Enterprise PDM after evaluating several PDM systems. The software was chosen for its ease of use, implementation, and administration, as well as its integrated revision control, automated workflow, and web-browser access capabilities. The company implemented 14 seats of SolidWorks Enterprise PDM to support its 11 SolidWorks 3D CAD software users and four seats of the SolidWorks Enterprise Web Client for non-CAD users. The implementation was completed over a long weekend, migrating between 35,000 and 40,000 files into the PDM Vault. The intuitive user interface of SolidWorks Enterprise PDM facilitated a smooth transition for users.

More specifically, Panasonic has developed a system that collects data from projectors, visualizes detailed operational statuses, and predicts issues and address them before failure occurs. Their projectors are embedded with a variety of sensors that measure power supply, voltage, video input/ output signals, intake/exhaust air temperatures, cooling fan operations, and light bulb operating time. These sensors have been used to make the projector more intelligent, automatically suspending operation when the temperature rises excessively, and automatically switching light bulbs. Although this was a great first step, Panasonic projectors were still not equipped with any capability to send the data over a network.
