About The Customer
The customer is a centralized State government information technology (IT) organization with vast responsibilities associated with delivering business services to more than 30,000 agency employees. The agency has taken advantage of NETSCOUT’s “single-vendor/multi-solution” approach, with nGeniusONE Service Assurance and Arbor Sightline & Threat Mitigation System technologies helping IT operations address Smart Visibility/Smarter Analytics and Cybersecurity requirements across their environment.
The Challenge
The centralized State government information technology (IT) organization faced everyday challenges of managing their large-scale, complex government service delivery environment. Now, IT leadership faced additional cybersecurity and network demands, including those described in the subsections that follow. They had to support Federal Cybersecurity Program Requirements and sustain hybrid workforce operations and user experience. They also had to enhance security operations intelligence into new data center operations.
The Solution
The agency’s collaborative cross-IT efforts focused on using NETSCOUT smart data sources and analytics to address their highprofile challenges. They met Federal Cybersecurity Program Requirements by deploying an nGenius 5000 Series PFS appliance supporting 40GB network speeds at the agency’s network connection edge in front of their Palo Alto firewall environment. They sustained hybrid workforce security and user experience by adding redundancy to further safeguard business operations by deploying PFS 7000 appliance technology, as well as a PFS software add-on for their already-installed PFS 5000 appliance. They enhanced security operations intelligence into data center performance by deploying PFS 5000 technology to provide network traffic aggregation for cybersecurity and service assurance monitoring at its new data center.

Electric energy operators around the world are working to increase the reliability and cyber resiliency of their systems. This includes Enel, a global power company that manages and monitors the Italian power grid. Securing the Connected Car Ecosystem
In-vehicle communications and entertainment system hosts high-value or sensitive applications. API libraries facilitate communication and sharing of vehicle data. These API libraries are vulnerable to reverse engineering and tampering attacks and may even result in loss of passenger safety. Attackers can inject malware that may be able to migrate to other in-car networks such as the controller-area-network (CAN) bus which links to the vehicle’s critical systems. Software provided for dealers to interface with cars through the OBD2 port is vulnerable to reverse engineering and tampering attacks. Hackers may be able to abuse these tools to inject malicious code into the ECUs and CAN bus. Attackers can lift the cryptographic keys used, and use that to build their own rogue apps/software. Their cloned version of the original app/software may have altered functionality, and may intend to gain access to other in-car networks.
