About The Customer
SKF is a leading knowledge engineering company committed to reducing friction and helping things run better. The company is the leading global supplier of products, customer solutions, and services in the business of bearings and seals. SKF's products are used in a wide range of applications, from wind farms and offshore oil rigs to high-speed trains, washing machines, and millions of motorcycles, trucks, and cars. The company has 46,000 employees in 140 countries, with its headquarters in Sweden. SKF has a strong drive to support its customers with cutting-edge solutions, as evidenced by the integration solution it devised for customer Stora Enso, a global provider of paper, wood, and packaging products.
The Challenge
SKF, a leading knowledge engineering company, was tasked with supporting its customer, Stora Enso, a global provider of paper, wood, and packaging products, with cutting-edge solutions. Stora Enso uses SKF’s cloud-based condition monitoring suite to ensure asset availability and is gearing up for growth. A prerequisite for this growth was establishing an interconnection between SKF’s software and Stora Enso’s SAP® system. In the past, there was no integration between SKF software and SAP. All individual software integrations for customers were developed from scratch.
The Solution
To improve re-usability, SKF decided on Software AG’s Model-to-Execute (M2E) approach, which combines process modeling, Web services, and SOA for enterprise application integration projects. The methodical approach enabled SKF to define business strategies, translate them into processes, and transfer the modeled processes into IT systems. ARIS was used to develop a detailed architecture and design concept. Processes were modeled using Event-driven Process Chain (EPC) flowcharts. Next, a framework based on Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN™) was generated for execution in webMethods BPMS. Because ARIS and webMethods work with the cloud, SKF was able to install the integration solution in the SKF One Global Cloud where the condition monitoring software is available.
Operational Impact
  • SKF was pleased with the maturity of the M2E concept; it simply helped the project run better.
  • Using M2E, SKF was able to improve Stora Enso’s business agility in a relatively short time frame.
  • As a result of this project, SKF now has a time-saving blueprint for other software integration projects.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Achieved six-figure cost savings.
