About The Customer
ROSS DIGITAL is a company that focuses on creating innovative solutions using digital technology. One of their projects, RATIO, is an automated barista that serves a range of beverages throughout the day and night. The concept of RATIO is to provide a versatile service, functioning as a coffee shop in the morning and converting into a cocktail bar at night. Customers can place their orders via an app by scanning a QR code. The app has a memory function that allows customers to customize their beverage preferences for repeat orders. Once an order is placed, a robotic arm powered by artificial intelligence prepares the beverage.
The Challenge
ROSS DIGITAL had a concept of an automated barista, RATIO, which could serve a range of beverages throughout the day and night. The idea was to have a system where customers could place orders via an app by scanning a QR code, and a robotic arm would prepare the beverage. The challenge was to bring this concept to life, from sketch to a ready-to-market product. The project required mechanical design, software logic and IPC coding, PLC, robotic arm programming, safety features positioning, electric circuitry, water and air management, supply chain setup for parts fabrication, full assembly integration, and stress tests.
The Solution
ROSS DIGITAL partnered with a team to develop and formalize bills of materials, specifications, and detailed documentation for the RATIO project. The team provided mechanical design, software logic and IPC coding, PLC, robotic arm programming, safety features positioning, electric circuitry, water and air management, supply chain setup for parts fabrication, full assembly integration, and stress tests. The team experimented with new robotic arm programming logics, including Epson and KUKA, but ultimately chose STAUBLI. The team also had to manage multiple versions of chuck designs to accommodate eight different cocktail glass types, interpret optimization efforts that required redesigns of sub mechanical elements, and provide on-site final assembly integration support at the end customer site.
Operational Impact
  • The first RATIO shop was successfully launched on June 9, 2018, in Shanghai.
  • The team was able to successfully experiment with new robotic arm programming logics and choose the most suitable one for the RATIO product.
  • The team managed to work through additional adaptations, including managing multiple versions of chuck designs to accommodate eight different cocktail glass types, interpreting optimization efforts that required redesigns of sub mechanical elements, and providing on-site final assembly integration support at the end customer site.
