About The Customer
Schuberg Philis is a prominent name in the Dutch technology landscape, known for its innovation and excellence in customer service and environmental responsibility. The company serves a diverse range of clients, from multinational giants to smaller local organizations. Schuberg Philis has been a pioneer in open source, cloud computing, virtual networking, DevOps, and automation. With a team of nearly 200 staff, the company offers a wide portfolio of services, including infrastructure configuration, software platform management, and application landscape orchestration. Schuberg Philis operates from its headquarters near Schiphol Airport and serves global customers, many of whom require 24/7 IT expertise.
The Challenge
Schuberg Philis needed a flexible switching architecture to support its 'Cloud Pods' and create a mission-critical cloud for its customers. The company operates under a 100% principle, ensuring product quality, customer satisfaction, and openness. With nearly 500 customers, including major banks and supermarket chains, Schuberg Philis required a robust infrastructure to meet the high demands of its clients. In 2011, as cloud computing was gaining traction, Schuberg Philis recognized the need for agility and flexibility offered by cloud solutions. However, their customers were conservative and hesitant about public cloud adoption. Therefore, Schuberg Philis embarked on a project to build its own Mission Critical Cloud, setting stringent security and performance criteria to meet their high standards.
The Solution
Schuberg Philis, with its deep DevOps culture, initially worked with both OpenStack and CloudStack to create a proof of concept cloud. They eventually chose CloudStack and began contributing to its development. The hardware aspect, including 'cloud pods' of networking, compute, and storage, was also crucial. Schuberg Philis selected Arista 7150 Series switches for their high performance and ultra-low latency. The open Linux on Arista switches allowed for powerful new capabilities and automation across the Critical Cloud Infrastructure. Schuberg Philis used Arista switches as the top-of-rack switch for their standardized 'cloud pods,' which included compute and storage for their critical cloud infrastructure. Each pod was managed using 'Cosmic,' Schuberg Philis' fork of the original CloudStack platform. Over 100 pods were deployed across four high-availability data centers, creating a resilient cloud infrastructure. The integration of Arista platforms into their SDN architecture provided phenomenal performance and allowed for the development of unique features.
Operational Impact
  • Arista switches have been running operationally without downtime for nearly five years, demonstrating high reliability.
  • The integration of automation technologies like Chef and Puppet has significantly improved infrastructure management efficiency.
  • The infrastructure management team of 6 engineers now manages close to 5000 servers, compared to 500 servers previously, thanks to automation.
  • Migration projects that previously took weeks now take minutes to replicate into the cloud, showcasing the efficiency of the new system.
  • The relationship with the Arista team has enabled the development of new features, adding unique capabilities to cloud management.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Network throughput levels exceeded those of AWS and Azure by magnitudes of 3x and more.
  • The infrastructure management team of 6 engineers now manages close to 5000 servers, compared to 500 servers previously.
