About The Customer
Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf is one of the largest research institutions in the German state of Saxony. It is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers and works in the fields of energy, health, and matter. The institution operates large-scale facilities with users all over the world and employs around 1,400 people. It has additional sites in Freiberg, Görlitz, Grenoble, Leipzig, and near Hamburg. The institution had been using Check Point's open server landscape for its firewall technology since the early 2000s, but the increasing performance demands necessitated a change.
The Challenge
Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, one of the largest research institutions in Saxony, Germany, was facing a significant challenge with its firewall technology. The institution was originally using the Check Point open server landscape without appliances, a solution that was no longer compatible with the growing performance demands. The institution needed a flexible security architecture that could scale instantly in an environment of growth. They were dealing with multiple systems for configuration and operation, which was not efficient. The increasing demand made appliances necessary. The existing system, under heavy load, would reduce the security level and allow traffic through without fully analyzing it. This posed a significant risk to the institution's security and integrity.
The Solution
To address these challenges, the institution decided to implement Check Point Quantum Maestro. This scalable solution was chosen due to the institution's satisfaction with Check Point's features and security systems. The institution installed two Maestro Hyperscale Orchestrators and two Quantum Security Gateways. As the system's capacity utilization grows, the number of gateways can be easily increased. For security management and monitoring, the institution uses Check Point Smart Console R80.20. The implementation of Check Point Maestro was completed in October 2019. The system's performance was stable during the first year of operation, with cluster performance increased by HyperSync technology. The maximum throughput of the current configuration is about 10 Gigabytes, with the potential to reach 100 Gigabytes.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Check Point Maestro proved to be a timely and effective solution for Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. When the coronavirus pandemic hit and all staff began working from home, the system was able to cope with the new demands effortlessly. The institution simply had to increase the number of licenses to enable staff to work from home. The positive feedback from employees confirmed that Check Point Maestro was the right solution. The institution's security reports also showed that while the number of attacks increased, the defense rate also improved. The reports indicated that the security gateway was working well, demonstrating the effectiveness of the solution. The transition to Maestro was not particularly difficult for the institution, which had already been running a Check Point system.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The system's maximum throughput of the current configuration is about 10 Gigabytes, with the potential to reach 100 Gigabytes.
  • The system was able to handle the increased demand when all staff began working from home due to the pandemic.
  • The institution was able to increase the number of licenses to enable 800 employees to work from their mobile offices simultaneously.
