About The Customer
RUAG Space is a leading provider of products for the space industry. The company specializes in the development and manufacturing of products for satellites and launch vehicles. RUAG Space's products are used in a wide range of applications, including communication, weather observation, and scientific research. The company is committed to innovation and continuously seeks to improve its products and processes. In this case, RUAG Space was looking to enhance its composite analysis process by integrating two software tools, Altair HyperWorks and ESAComp, to streamline and accelerate the analysis of composite structures.
The Challenge
RUAG Space, a leading provider of products for the space industry, was faced with the challenge of combining the powerful meshing and post-processing capabilities of Altair HyperWorks with the advanced composite failure analysis methods provided by ESAComp software from Altair. The company needed to streamline and accelerate the analysis of composite structures by significantly reducing unnecessary breaks in the data flow. The challenge was to create a seamless integration between the two software tools to provide a unified work environment for producing results needed in the design verification of satellite structures.
The Solution
RUAG Space decided to rely on standardized, state-of-the-art analysis tools to address the challenge. The company created a bi-directional interface between HyperWorks and ESAComp by integrating the two pieces of software. This integration allowed for the graphical display of ESAComp results within HyperWorks, enabling fast identification of critical load cases, critical elements, critical plies, and failure modes. The solution provided one integrated work environment for producing results needed in the design verification of satellite structures. The interface between ESAComp and HyperWorks was offered as a standard to all customers. The solution was mature enough for project work and was tested on the MetOp Second Generation meteorological observation satellite.
Operational Impact
  • The integration of Altair HyperWorks and ESAComp software has significantly streamlined and accelerated the analysis of composite structures at RUAG Space. The creation of a bi-directional interface between the two software tools has eliminated unnecessary breaks in the data flow, enabling faster and more efficient analysis. The graphical display of ESAComp results within HyperWorks has facilitated the quick identification of critical load cases, elements, plies, and failure modes. This has not only improved the efficiency of the analysis process but also the accuracy of the results. The solution has been mature enough for project work and has been successfully tested on the MetOp Second Generation meteorological observation satellite.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Significant reduction of unnecessary breaks in the data flow
  • Fast identification of critical load cases, elements, plies, and failure modes
  • One integrated work environment for producing results needed in the design verification of satellite structures
