About The Customer
Food Network, since its first broadcast in 1993, has grown exponentially to become a definitive channel for food-loving audiences around the world. The network has launched many new shows each month to cater to its expanding audience. The network's audience has grown immensely, with almost 100 million U.S. households now receiving the channel. As its audience has increased, so has the competition from other networks that want to emulate its success. To attract new viewers and stay on top of the television food chain, the network is constantly producing fresh and original content. The network's production team is small, with 10 edit suites manned by five staff editors and a pool of 25 freelance editors.
The Challenge
Food Network, a popular channel for food enthusiasts worldwide, was facing a significant challenge in managing and producing an increasing volume of original content. The network was experiencing rapid growth and change, launching many new shows each month to cater to its expanding audience of almost 100 million U.S. households. However, the production process was hampered by an aging tape-based workflow, which was inefficient and costly. The network faced media management and storage challenges, with material sometimes coming in late or early, requiring extended online storage or immediate availability. The production was also geographically dispersed, with field-based shows shot across the country, production hub in New York, and broadcast operations in Knoxville, Tennessee. The production team, though small, needed to improve efficiency and enhance collaboration across multiple locations.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Food Network updated its production workflow with an end-to-end solution built on the Avid MediaCentral platform. This included advanced media management and storage solutions like ISIS shared storage, Interplay | Production asset management, and Interplay Central. These solutions enabled everyone across the organization to upload, access, edit, share, log, track, and sync media and projects in real time, from any location. The new workflow eliminated the need for videotapes, accelerating the production process and saving costs. Producers could now review material via any desktop PC, making the process faster and easier. For short-form content, the network used its in-house network to deliver content to satellite locations across the U.S., saving on tape and shipping costs.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Avid MediaCentral platform significantly streamlined Food Network's production process. The new workflow enabled the network to manage and produce a high volume of original content more efficiently. It enhanced collaboration across the network's geographically dispersed team, allowing everyone to upload, access, edit, share, log, track, and sync media and projects in real time, from any location. The elimination of videotapes not only saved costs but also accelerated the production process. Producers could now review material via any desktop PC, making the process faster and easier. The network was also able to deliver content to satellite locations across the U.S., further enhancing its operational efficiency.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The new workflow eliminated the need for videotapes, saving costs.
  • The network was able to deliver content to satellite locations across the U.S., saving on tape and shipping costs.
  • The network was able to start airing promos for a new show a month before it aired, contributing significantly to the show’s success.
