About The Customer
Blekinge County Council (Blekinge Hospital) is one of a few county councils in Sweden that does not face financial problems. In its 2004 annual report, it showed significant cost reductions. At the same time, it has managed to improve the availability towards its patients. The bottom line result for 2004 was a surplus of €2.3 million. As the IT Analyst at Blekinge County Council, Leif Fransson is responsible for its QlikView applications. He was involved already in 1995 when it started using QlikView in the first place. He was also instrumental when making the decision to expand QlikView to the rest of the organization with a web solution a couple of years ago.
The Challenge
Blekinge County Council, a leading healthcare provider in Sweden, was facing several challenges. They needed to decrease expenditures for prescribed medical products by increasing prescriptions for lower cost medicine. They also aimed to improve the availability of services to reduce patient waiting times. Furthermore, they wanted to increase the capacity of the hospital to meet increasing medical demands with existing resources. The council was also looking for a way to review operational data easily and improve the quality of information by making each person that enters data into the system responsible for the data they publish.
The Solution
Blekinge County Council deployed QlikView to 2,400 employees, with the first applications up and running in just 4 weeks. With QlikView across 4 functional areas, Blekinge County Council analyzes patient flows and patterns, medical supply costs, financial budgets, and diagnosis and treatments – all focused on lowering costs and improving patient care. With QlikView Server and Publisher, Blekinge County Council easily handles the data volume associated with more than 500,000 annual patient visits. Pulling data from an array of sources such as Conrad, Melior, Prima, Provisio, and Raindance, QlikView now provides a common dashboard for all.
Operational Impact
  • Shortened waiting times for patients by monitoring inflow patterns
  • Increased operational efficiencies by benchmarking against other hospitals
  • Improved treatment recommendations by analyzing survival expectancy data
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced annual medical costs by 5% or €850,000 by analyzing prescription patterns
