About The Customer
The customer in this case study is East Middle School, located in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. The school is a part of a rapidly growing community that has seen a population increase of nearly 70% in twenty years. To meet the educational needs of the increasing number of K-12 students, a new school was built. The $24 million, 180,000 sq ft school was designed by Eppstein Uhen Architects and built by VJS Construction Services. The school was designed with a house concept and has a capacity of 1,000 students. Each grade (6-8) wing contains two multi-purpose spaces for the three houses to share for co-curricular activities such as movies and instructional programming.
The Challenge
The rapidly growing community of Oak Creek, south of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, faced the challenge of meeting the educational needs of its increasing number of K-12 students. The population had increased nearly 70% in twenty years, necessitating the construction of a new school. The $24 million, 180,000 sq ft East Middle School was designed to accommodate 1,000 students. However, the constant movement of energetic preteens put a heavy demand on both internal and external doorways throughout the school, requiring a robust and reliable solution.
The Solution
To meet the challenge of high-traffic use and ensure the safety and security of the students, contractors VJS Construction Services chose versatile DORMA architectural hardware for East Middle School. The solution included DORMA 8900 Series Door Closers, which combine a hydraulic control system with modern architectural styling, and DORMA TS93 Series Door Closers, which feature a unique cam and roller design that allows doors to open more easily. The school also installed DORMA 9000 Series Exit Devices, which provide superior durability for high impact applications, and DORMA Locksets, which offer security and have a high performance cylindrical chassis. The non-detectored EMF Series Holder Device, designed to contain and cut the spread of fire and smoke, was also installed and wired to a central alarm system.
Operational Impact
  • The DORMA door closers, exit devices, and holders stand up to the wear and tear of high-traffic use.
  • The hardware offers rugged reliability and helps ensure the students' safety and security.
  • The non-detectored EMF Series Holder Device is designed to contain and cut the spread of fire and smoke when wired to a central alarm system.
