About The Customer
E.ON is a leading energy distribution company in Sweden. It manages the largest energy distribution network in the country, serving around 90% of households and 10% of business consumers. The company is committed to constantly improving its service level for its customers, minimizing the number of network interruptions, and ensuring a reliable, continuous power supply. E.ON is also focused on making energy distribution more environmentally friendly while maintaining high efficiency and reliability. The company's sustainability objectives include becoming fossil fuel-free by 2025 and reducing the risk of greenhouse gas emissions.
The Challenge
E.ON, the largest energy distribution network in Sweden, is committed to improving its service level, minimizing network interruptions, and ensuring a reliable, continuous power supply. The company is also focused on making energy distribution more environmentally friendly while maintaining high efficiency and reliability. E.ON's sustainability objectives include becoming fossil fuel-free by 2025 and reducing the risk of greenhouse gas emissions. To move towards a more sustainable, greener distribution network, E.ON decided to explore the possibility of replacing their SF6 gas-insulated switchgear with a more environmentally friendly, SF6-free technology. The new solution needed to comply with the energy transition happening in Sweden, ensure greater personnel safety, and be interoperable with existing equipment.
The Solution
E.ON partnered with Schneider Electric to implement their new SF6-free switchgear technology for a pilot project in Norrköping. The technology, insulated with pure air and powered by advanced digital technologies, was durable and cost-effective, complying with E.ON's current substation solutions. The collaboration between Schneider Electric, E.ON, and local substation manufacturer KL Industri was successful, with the new SF6-free solution being easy to install, sparing E.ON's customers prolonged power outages. Along with the SF6-free solution, E.ON also implemented the Easergy T300 remote terminal unit (RTU), which enables greater insight into network operations. This allows the company to monitor the network status, spot faults early to minimize interruption time for its customers, and better plan network maintenance.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the SF6-free switchgear has been a significant step forward for E.ON towards a more sustainable, smarter distribution network.
  • The whole substation kiosk was easy to install, sparing E.ON's customers prolonged power outages.
  • The device was praised by E.ON's technicians for its intuitive interface.
  • The Easergy T300 remote terminal unit (RTU) enables greater insight into network operations, allowing the company to monitor the network status, spot faults early, and better plan network maintenance.
