As an engineering service provider, SEGULA Technologies makes extensive use of computer-aided engineering (CAE), computer-aided design (CAD), and other commercial development software across the enterprise.
The Challenge
SEGULA Technologies, an international engineering consultancy, faced a significant challenge in managing and monitoring a vast variety of commercial software licenses across the enterprise. As an engineering service provider, the company extensively uses computer-aided engineering (CAE), computer-aided design (CAD), and other commercial development software. The usage of these software tools varied, with some being used more frequently than others. However, all tools could be utilized on certain projects. The company needed to efficiently manage the peaks and valleys in software usage. Prior to implementing a solution, each business unit gauged its software requirements based on subjective data, leading to inefficiencies and potential overuse or underuse of licenses. The company sought a solution to optimize software usage, improve decisions on software renewal and acquisition, and better manage its IT budget.
The Solution
SEGULA Technologies decided to implement Altair’s software asset optimization (SAO) solution to monitor and optimize their software usage. The SAO solution collects data from all enabled vendor license servers and generates consistent, on-demand reports about software usage across the enterprise IT landscape. It comes standard with interactive dashboards to visualize key metrics and trends and generate critical alert notifications via email and text message. The implementation process involved installing an Engine, a MySQL database, and a HiQube App Server in the system. Agents send data packets to a network directory accessible to the engine at pre-configured frequencies. The Engine retrieves this data, parses it, and uploads it into the MySQL database. HiQube then imports data incrementally from the MySQL database into various Qubes designed for different types of reports and analysis. These reports are accessed by end users through a web portal.
Operational Impact
  • With the implementation of Altair’s SAO solution, SEGULA Technologies was able to trace the usage and need of each software type precisely. This allowed IT Directors to evaluate capacity and budget requirements for each tool by business unit, based on real data rather than subjective estimates. The system also helped in identifying problems such as difficulties in obtaining licenses, bad dimensioning of the software landscape, people opening too many sessions or running unneeded software, and blocking software licenses for others. It also enabled the company to monitor how many licenses of a certain software type were available, if any usage request had been denied and why, or if a software package was not being used at all and could therefore be eliminated. This led to more efficient software usage and better decision-making regarding software renewal and acquisition.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Easy access to important information
  • Early and reasonable decisions on software renewal and acquisition, leading to better budget planning
  • Potential savings on software expense
