About The Customer
New York City is one of the most populous cities in the United States, known for its bustling streets and vibrant culture. The city's fleet operations cover over 29,000 vehicles, making it a significant part of the city's infrastructure. The fleet is managed by the City Fleet department, which is responsible for ensuring the safety and efficiency of the city's vehicles. The department is committed to improving the safety of their operations and reducing traffic-related deaths in the city. As part of this commitment, they have embraced the Vision Zero Action Plan, an initiative launched by Mayor Bill de Blasio to combat traffic-related deaths in the city.
The Challenge
New York City, under the leadership of Mayor Bill de Blasio, launched the Vision Zero Action Plan to combat traffic-related deaths. In 2013, the year before de Blasio was elected mayor, there were 183 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes, the highest number since 2003. The City Fleet, which covers over 29,000 vehicles, needed a highly accurate way to track collision metrics. The metrics tracked include citywide collisions by fleet agency, collisions with injuries, pedestrian injuries, fatalities, collisions by geographic location, and collisions with both moving and non-moving objects. Other important fleet pieces tracked are internal, such as whether or not employees have completed defensive driving courses, state inspections, completed and overdue preventive maintenance, fleet roster and the installation of truck sideguards.
The Solution
The City Fleet uses three forms of Business Intelligence (BI) offered within the AssetWorks FleetFocus application to help the Vision Zero initiative succeed. These include Crystal Reports, Dashboards, and Ad Hoc reporting. Crystal Reports helps to accurately track and report on various factors such as collision metrics, defensive driving course completions, and preventive maintenance. Dashboards are used to display real-time information using a graphical gauge format. They show various threshold points, such as breakdowns waiting for a tow, suspended road calls, and vehicles awaiting an assignment. Ad Hoc reporting allows the fleet team to create multiple reports to show information in slightly different formats than the standard FleetFocus reporting library. This allows the team to look at their information in new ways, so they can completely understand their data.
Operational Impact
  • The launch of Vision Zero has already made the City fleet safer.
  • The fleet team can now accurately track and report on various factors such as collision metrics, defensive driving course completions, and preventive maintenance.
  • The use of dashboards allows the team to display real-time information using a graphical gauge format.
  • Ad Hoc reporting allows the fleet team to create multiple reports to show information in slightly different formats than the standard FleetFocus reporting library.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The average speed limit in the City lowered to 25 mph.
  • Stricter speeding and dangerous driving enforcements have been implemented.
  • 12 traffic safety-related bills have been passed.
