About The Customer
Nuna is a healthcare technology company that partners with government, employers, and health plans to improve the quality of care. They translate data into meaning, shining a light on the parts of the system that work and those that don’t. With these actionable insights, Nuna’s partners can invest in programs that improve health outcomes, enable value-based care, and improve access to high quality, affordable care for their members and beneficiaries. Nuna’s Director, Trust & Security, Robert Wood, is a former consultant, an expert in information security assessment and testing, and is active in the information security community, serving as a member of OWASP and Infraguard. His team is responsible for owning and leading the security program governing all of Nuna’s product, data (internal and customer data), and corporate assets. Their strategy is to be proactive and scalable to meet the needs of protecting healthcare records at nation-scale.
The Challenge
Nuna, a healthcare technology company, was facing challenges in understanding cloud usage and comparing services side-by-side. They had little ability to find and protect electronic protected health information (ePHI) and other sensitive data. They also needed improved visibility and control over sanctioned services including Google G Suite, Slack, and Box. As a rapidly-growing company that’s moving large numbers of healthcare records from Medicare and related organizations into its own systems for analysis, Nuna needed to treat the ePHI in its environment with extreme caution. They needed to have full visibility and ways to protect and control the ePHI that comes into its possession, irrespective of delivery.
The Solution
Nuna chose Netskope as their cloud access security brokers (CASB) solution. They liked Netskope both from a high-level governance perspective as well from a power user one. They can drill down into configuration options and alert details, as well as streamline processes like vendor assurance. Netskope also helps their relationships outside of the security team. One way is by identifying the security posture of services and comparing to alternatives. They use that information to interact credibly with Nuna’s business units. Netskope helps them not just solve a technical problem, but improves their standing from a political and relationship standpoint. Nuna is a big user of the Google G Suite and has adopted Slack for project collaboration and chat, and Box for file sharing and content collaboration. Given communications and shared files within these services, Wood and team need strong DLP that enables Nuna to find and protect ePHI both at rest and en route to services.
Operational Impact
  • Gained visibility into cloud usage; enabled better decision-making
  • Complied with HIPAA, protected sensitive data, responded to audits efficiently
  • Secured sensitive data in sanctioned apps, and prevented it in unsanctioned ones
