About The Customer
Established in 2015, Singapore’s National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) manages the nation's petascale facilities. NSCC provides high-performance computing (HPC) resources to support both public- and private-sector organizations including research institutes, educational institutes, businesses, and government agencies. NSCC and their university and agency stakeholders advance Singapore’s strategic interests and facilitate industry transformation using HPC in areas including visualization, modeling, simulation, data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI). NSCC is committed to helping educational institutions train future generations of an HPC-enabled workforce.
The Challenge
Singapore’s National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) is a critical part of the nation's research infrastructure, supporting innovation in various sectors such as healthcare, urban planning, and biodiversity. NSCC was in search of a long-term collaborator who could provide a comprehensive workload management solution for its ASPIRE 1 petascale supercomputer. The center required a robust, enterprise-grade solution to optimally schedule, monitor, and manage its supercomputers. Additionally, NSCC needed a centralized resource allocation and budgeting solution to manage stakeholder resource quotas. The center also sought a national license plan to offer the software to all nonprofit research organizations in Singapore. The challenge was to find a solution that could cater to these diverse needs while ensuring efficient and effective use of the supercomputers.
The Solution
Altair provided a comprehensive solution with enterprise-grade support and the national license plan that NSCC required. The solution included efficient workload management by Altair® PBS Professional®, a powerful workload manager designed to improve productivity, optimize utilization and efficiency, and simplify administration for clusters, clouds, and supercomputers. With PBS Professional, NSCC could allocate resources and manage budgets across its entire system of collaborators and stakeholders. In addition, NSCC's university and agency stakeholders benefited from Altair’s technical consulting expertise and consistent service-level agreements (SLAs). Altair and NSCC are also exploring thermal-aware scheduling to optimize datacenter power usage effectiveness without breaking topology-aware scheduling, as well as offering supercomputing resources over a 5G network using remote edge servers.

  • With Altair's solution, NSCC has been able to provide best-in-class resources for research and education nationwide, positioning Singapore as a center of HPC-borne innovation. The efficient and effective use of supercomputers has accelerated the research and innovation of NSCC's users. The workload management tools provided by Altair have been able to cater to NSCC's requirements and future demands. NSCC’s next-generation system is a heterogeneous and distributed supercomputer architecture with mixed workload requirements for traditional HPC, AI, bioinformatics, and hybrid HPC with cloud bursting.
