About The Customer
NHS Scotland is a part of the National Health Service, employing 140,000 staff who provide public health and social care services to the population in Scotland. The National Services for Scotland (NSS) is a support mechanism for NHS Scotland, providing it with the infrastructure and services that the health service requires, including shared digital, security, finance, and HR services. With the increasing use of digital services, such as video consultations and smart technology, NHS Scotland's data volumes have increased tenfold over the past five years, making the task of securing the data even more critical.
The Challenge
NHS Scotland faced the challenge of protecting vital patient healthcare data held in the public cloud. With the increasing use of digital services such as video consultations and smart technology, the security of health data became paramount. Over the past five years, NHS Scotland's data volumes have increased tenfold, making the task of securing the data even more critical. The organization needed a solution that could provide complete threat prevention against cyberattacks and could easily scale with the growing data volumes. In 2018, NHS Scotland was affected by the WannaCry ransomware attack, which impacted patient-facing services and made some patient data inaccessible. This incident highlighted the need for a robust solution that could prevent similar cyberattacks and ensure visibility into the information, who is accessing it, where it is being shared, and what is being done with it.
The Solution
To address these challenges, NHS Scotland implemented Check Point's advanced cloud security solution, CloudGuard IaaS, as part of its migration of health data and services to the public cloud. This solution provides the same advanced threat prevention and data security as the organization’s on-premises deployment. NHS Scotland also implemented a version of Check Point’s cloud security blueprint and uses CloudGuard IaaS in a “hub and spoke” model, which allows improved visibility and the right level of segmentation within their public cloud deployment. Check Point Maestro was used to deliver the hyperscale features that the organization required, enabling it to seamlessly expand existing security gateways to hyperscale capacity on demand. Additionally, Check Point SandBlast Zero-Day Protection was used to stop unknown malware, zero-day, and targeted attacks from infiltrating the networks.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Check Point solutions has provided NHS Scotland with vital security for sensitive healthcare data. The ease of deployment, management, and maintenance of cloud security with scalability has been a significant benefit. The organization has been able to maintain a highly efficient deployment by easily scaling up and down when new services are added or others are not in use. The solutions have also enabled NHS Scotland to comply with GDPR and national legislation on data security. Furthermore, the seamless integration with the existing SIEM solution has improved the overall operational efficiency. The organization now has the confidence that its data, although stored in the public cloud, remains absolutely secure.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Increased visibility into how health data is accessed and used
  • Ability to easily scale up and down with growing data volumes
  • Compliance with GDPR and national legislation on data security
