The company is the only automotive provider worldwide who is able to deliver innovations in the field of tailor-rolled blanks (TRB). Mubea has worked with Altair for over six years in a highly collaborative fashion, frequently conveying ideas to Altair for new simulation uses and seeking advice in applying their market-leading HyperWorks suite of computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications to Mubea’s unique design needs.
The Challenge
Mubea, a leading automotive provider, is known for its innovative light weighting projects for large automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The company has pioneered the process of producing tailor-rolled blanks (TRB), a new type of process for high volume production. TRB allows engineers to tailor the blank so certain sheet thicknesses are located precisely where they are needed, resulting in the production of more cost-effective, lower weight components. However, the company faced challenges in improving its capacity for design optimization and innovation. Mubea was primarily using RADIOSS, a structural analysis solver in the HyperWorks suite used for highly non-linear problems under dynamic loadings. The company was looking to expand their current software contract and add a new cluster to their high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure to support current and new users of their design applications.
The Solution
To expand their computer-aided engineering (CAE) and HPC capabilities and reduce calculation times, Mubea employed Altair’s HyperWorks Unlimited Physical Appliance, a fully-managed state of the art HPC private cloud appliance for CAE. This turnkey appliance includes pre-configured hardware and software, with unlimited use of all HyperWorks applications plus PBS Works for HPC workload management. Provided on an annual lease basis, HyperWorks Unlimited Physical Appliance comes fully configured and is easy to install and manage. Altair provides and supports the solution in partnership with market-leading hardware suppliers, so Mubea has only one vendor to engage with for both hardware and software.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of HyperWorks Unlimited Physical Appliance has expanded Mubea's CAE capabilities for unlimited design exploration and more efficient use of RADIOSS. The appliance is used mainly by the group of engineers in charge of the development of the tailor rolled blanks, but it is also available to every other engineer at Mubea in need of access to simulation tools. Around ten engineers are currently using HyperWorks Unlimited with a plan to broaden the user base in the future. The implementation of an HPC system within a company’s hardware environment with existing development process can be very challenging. But HyperWorks Unlimited Physical Appliance meets these challenges by providing a complete and essentially maintenance-free package.
