About The Customer
Lix is a study platform primarily targeted at university students. It offers students the opportunity to purchase their books at a cheaper rate than traditional shops and provides a platform for collaboration. The company was founded in Denmark about three years ago and has since expanded to the United Kingdom, Holland, Norway, and Sweden. They are also expanding into the US market. The platform is made up of various services, including a service that converts books from publishers into an internal format and a main backend that handles all the business logic.
The Challenge
Lix, a study platform for university students, was looking for a way to improve their platform's responsiveness and speed. They wanted to use containers to build a high-quality platform, but they faced challenges in running and managing data services like Elasticsearch, Cassandra, and Postgres in containers. Initially, they manually managed node labels for these services, which was time-consuming and prone to errors. Moreover, when a machine failed, they lacked the ability to temporarily move the Cassandra pod to another machine while the cluster recovered.
The Solution
Lix decided to leverage Kubernetes to provide an environment that easily scales with the growth of their platform. They also chose to use Portworx Enterprise for cloud-native storage and data management. Portworx allowed Lix to automate their containers without sacrificing performance. It also increased their operational efficiency by automatically handling common failures that occur in a dynamic server environment, such as server failures and network partitions. This allowed the Lix team to focus more on improving the software running on the platform and less on fixing the platform itself.
Operational Impact
  • Portworx saved Lix time by allowing it to focus on creating the world’s best study platform and not managing storage.
  • Portworx enabled Lix to achieve automation via containers without sacrificing performance.
  • Portworx increased Lix’s operational efficiency by automatically handling common failures that occur in a dynamic server environment like server failures and network partitions, enabling them to focus on their customers.
