About The Customer
Medxcel is a healthcare management company with facilities across the United States. The company is responsible for the safety and well-being of its patients and associates, particularly during natural disasters. Medxcel understands the significant implications of evacuating a hospital, including the costs, time, and potential distress to patients. Therefore, the company values timely and accurate information to help it make critical decisions. Medxcel has been working with StormGeo for over a decade, relying on their expertise and services to provide site-specific weather forecasts that enable them to make informed decisions about their facilities during severe weather events.
The Challenge
Medxcel, a healthcare management company with facilities across the U.S., faced a significant challenge during Hurricane Irma. The company had to make critical decisions about whether to evacuate three of its facilities in Florida, including a nursing home and two hospitals. Local authorities advised evacuation of one hospital due to the anticipated storm surge and flooding. However, evacuating a hospital is a complex and costly process, requiring significant time, resources, and potentially causing distress to patients. A single patient evacuation can cost thousands of dollars, and a full-scale hospital evacuation can cost hundreds of thousands, if not millions. Furthermore, the decision to evacuate must be made at least 48 hours before a hurricane's landfall, a time when the exact path and impact of the hurricane may still be uncertain.
The Solution
To address this challenge, Medxcel partnered with StormGeo, a provider of weather forecasting services. StormGeo provided Medxcel with site-specific forecasts that were tailored to the exact location of their facilities. These forecasts took into account the potential impacts from wind, rain, and flooding. In contrast to the broad, worst-case scenario forecasts often relied upon by local authorities, StormGeo's forecasts provided a more nuanced and accurate picture of the potential impact of the hurricane. This allowed Medxcel to make more informed decisions about whether to evacuate their facilities. For example, when local authorities recommended evacuation based on data suggesting a five-foot rise in the river next to one of the hospitals, StormGeo's data predicted a rise of only 18 inches. Based on this information, Medxcel decided not to evacuate.
Operational Impact
  • The partnership with StormGeo has had significant operational benefits for Medxcel. Having access to site-specific forecasts has enabled Medxcel to make more informed decisions about whether to evacuate their facilities during severe weather events. This has not only saved the company significant costs and time, but also reduced potential distress for patients. Furthermore, the ability to have direct communication with StormGeo's meteorologists during these critical times has been invaluable. Medxcel can call StormGeo with questions or invite them to join their conference calls, ensuring that they have the most up-to-date and accurate information to guide their decisions. This has strengthened the relationship between Medxcel and StormGeo, and reinforced the value of having a trusted source of weather information that understands the specific challenges faced by the healthcare industry.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Cost savings from avoiding unnecessary evacuations, which can cost hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars.
  • Time savings from not having to coordinate and execute a large-scale evacuation.
  • Reduced distress for patients who would otherwise have to be evacuated.
