The Challenge
Curly Tips, a web application, was created to address the challenge of finding relevant and personalized hair care information for individuals with naturally curly and afro-textured hair. The founder, Juwan Bepo, recognized that amidst the thousands of hair care videos and blog content available online, it was difficult for individuals to find information that specifically catered to their unique hair needs. The challenge was to provide a straightforward way for users to explore techniques, styles, and products for their unique hair types. The founder wanted to alleviate the frustration that often accompanies learning how to care for afro-textured hair and provide a platform where users could find relevant information quickly and easily.
The Solution
Curly Tips was developed using Bubble, a no-code tool, which allowed the founder to design and develop the application in a faster and more cost-effective manner. The application works by allowing users to navigate to the Browse page where they can see all of the videos currently available on the platform. Users can apply any combination of filters such as Hair Type, Hair Density, Hair Length, and Tutorial Type to locate relevant content. They can also use the search bar to find videos based on a particular style or technique. Each individual video title can be clicked on to see a list of brands and products used in the selected tutorial video. In the future, Curly Tips plans to launch original video tutorials with everyday individuals and a blog featuring natural hair experts who can relay factual information directly to users.
Operational Impact
  • Since its launch in early September, Curly Tips has received constructive feedback from users, which has provided valuable direction for the development of new features. The platform has also secured its first contractor to begin creating original branded content. In the future, Curly Tips plans to enhance the overall user experience by allowing users to create accounts and save videos. The platform also plans to partner with reputable Black-owned, natural hair care brands to ensure users are aware of the high-quality products created by their own community.
