The Challenge
The production team of the James Bond film, Spectre, faced a significant challenge in handling an extraordinary volume of video footage and designing an accompanying soundscape for the movie. The plot of the 26th installment in the franchise was complex, involving multiple locations and a large cast of characters. The team had to weave this intricate narrative seamlessly while dealing with a huge volume of footage. The challenge was further compounded by the need for seamless collaboration between the director and editorial teams. The supervising sound editors, Karen Baker Landers and Per Hallberg, were tasked with creating the perfect soundtrack to echo the high octane adventures of James Bond. They had to overcome a challenging edit on Spectre, requiring them to work closely with the video and sound teams.
The Solution
The production team relied on Avid Everywhere, using solutions from the Avid Artist Suite and Storage Suite, powered by the Avid MediaCentral platform. The editorial team used Avid Media Composer, the industry’s leading editing solution, to cut Spectre. The team consisted of the editor, his associate, and various assistant editors, who would receive, log and send content to bins to work with across five Media Composer systems. Shared Storage facilitated real-time collaboration between the editorial, sound and marketing departments. The supervising sound editors used Avid Pro Tools, the industry-standard, audio-production solution, to create the film's soundtrack. They worked closely with the rest of the team, adapting and adjusting their plans as needed, depending on the needs of the project and filmmaker. The collaboration was effortless and during the final mix, the director was able to go from score sessions, score mix downs, visual FX, color timing, ADR sessions, and to the final mix.
