About The Customer
Bel Group is a global cheese brand that began in 1865 in a mountainous region of France called Jura. The company gained popularity in the European market with its original product, The Laughing Cow, and followed this success with other brands that have become household names across Europe, including Babybel, Mini Babybel, Kiri, and Leerdammer. Today, the company sells more than 30,000 SKUs to 120 countries, with production sites and subcontractors around the world. The European region still accounts for 55 percent of Bel Group’s sales and 51 percent of its production volume.
The Challenge
Bel Group, a global cheese brand, faced logistics challenges as it expanded its operations internationally. The company had to manage the shipment of highly perishable products over long distances, with transportation times ranging from a single day to three months. Safety stocks, promotional events, and other variables had to be carefully managed to ensure both the availability and freshness of Bel Group’s products. The company needed a solution to support a global sales and operations planning (S&OP) process and provide a consolidated view of demand, capacity, and service levels across its worldwide operations.
The Solution
Bel Group partnered with JDA Software to manage its global growth and the logistics challenges that came with it. The company implemented JDA Demand and JDA Fulfillment to support its global S&OP process. JDA Demand was used to create an 18-month running forecast, while JDA Fulfillment was used to create constraint-based production plans and build truckloads for transportation planning. The implementation of these solutions provided Bel Group with an overview of all the activity going on in the company around the world. The company also undertook several technology upgrades to ensure that it was leveraging the most recent version of the JDA solutions and capabilities.
Operational Impact
  • Implemented a global S&OP process, supported by JDA solutions.
  • Achieved a running 18-month forecast that captures 98 percent of global demand.
  • Decreased markdowns based on product perishability.
  • Increased productivity of the planning team.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 98 percent of global market demand is managed via JDA Demand and JDA Fulfillment.
  • 95 percent of worldwide production volumes are managed via JDA Demand and JDA Fulfillment.
  • Significant reduction in the percentage of products that need to be marked down due to perishability issues.
