About The Customer
The company is one of the largest life insurance companies in the United States and one of the largest insurers in the world. They have over $500 billion in total assets under management and nearly 10,000 employees. The company operates in the financial services industry and is based in the United States. The company had a mandate for IT to reduce spend and create a secure, efficient cloud strategy moving forward. They standardized on Box as the corporate file sharing solution in conjunction with an initiative to move to the cloud and streamline cloud services and apps across the company.
The Challenge
The company had a mandate for IT to reduce spend and create a secure, efficient cloud strategy moving forward. As a company in the financial services industry, IT had to protect employee and customer data, case information, proprietary financial data, business plans, and more – all of which was being shared and used through cloud services. And with the recent standardization on Box, IT needed to coach all employees to using Box instead of unsecure cloud storage apps that weren’t enterprise-ready. Netskope helped IT identify all cloud storage apps in used and most of them were not enterprise-ready – leading to the initiative to coach all users over to Box.
The Solution
Using Netskope for Box, the customer automatically discovered sensitive content residing within their corporate-sanctioned instance of Box. By developing DLP content profiles to match with personally identifiable information (PII) and other confidential data, IT was able to take action on files that were out of compliance and violating policy. They were able to segment content by sharing status (private, shared internally, shared externally), file type, and other parameters, and then take bulk actions on the riskiest files first. For example, they could chose to discontinue access to publicly exposed files, transfer ownership of abandoned files, encrypt files with sensitive content, and quarantine content that shouldn’t be in the cloud. And with the Netskope Active platform, the company can continue to monitor files and take action in real-time. In addition to finding and securing existing content within the corporate Box instance, IT used Netskope to coach users from unsanctioned cloud storage apps. With Netskope’s integrated workflows and real-time policy enforcement, IT was able to display custom coaching messages when users tried to upload content to unsanctioned cloud storage services. Automatic redirects were also built in so that the user could sign up to the corporate instance of Box.
Operational Impact
  • After implementing Netskope, IT can now protect all sensitive information in real-time and enforce security policies for compliance.
  • They can also coach employees to using Box for secure file sharing and collaboration.
  • The company uses Netskope to discover and assess risk of all cloud services that employees are using throughout the company.
  • For a more efficient and cost effective cloud strategy, IT uses Netskope for visibility into the security and enterprise-readiness levels of each app for purchasing and standardization decisions.
