About The Customer
Koch Media GmbH is a leading independent producer and marketer of digital entertainment products in Europe and North America. The company distributes movies, video games, and software products, and publishes games under the Deep Silver label. It operates across more than 25 locations, each with its own security rules and policies. The company is trusted for a wide range of media products, including games. However, the process of moving products through development with multiple partners potentially exposes them to risk. The company is growing rapidly, adding more locations and staff, which increases its attack surface.
The Challenge
Koch Media, a leading independent producer and marketer of digital entertainment products, faced significant challenges in securing its applications and intellectual property, including game code, across its 25 locations. Each location had its own security rules and policies, making the task even more complex. The company was using Cisco Adaptive Security Appliances (ASA) in each location, which required manual reconfiguration for any firewall rule change. This process was not only time-consuming but also prone to human error. Moreover, the company was dealing with a growing amount of malware that its antivirus was unable to detect. Another major concern was the safe sharing of large files, as securing ports or IP addresses was no longer sufficient. The company needed a solution that could secure the application layer, especially for assets like game code.
The Solution
Koch Media deployed Check Point SandBlast Zero-Day Protection, which provided real-time protection against zero-day attacks using sandboxing and Threat Extraction. SandBlast Threat Emulation performed real-time sandboxing capabilities, inspecting files and running them in a virtual environment to discover and block malware. SandBlast Threat Extraction removed exploitable content from documents and delivered a safe copy of the file to users. The solution also provided granular control over applications, allowing the team to create specific policies based on different attributes to ensure that only authorized users could access the code. Check Point SmartEvent consolidated monitoring, logging, reporting, and event analysis into a single console, providing centralized management and visibility into attack data from all locations. Changes became as simple as drag and drop, significantly improving management efficiency.
Operational Impact
  • The deployment of Check Point SandBlast Zero-Day Protection has significantly improved Koch Media's security posture. The solution's real-time sandboxing capabilities and Threat Extraction have enabled the company to discover and block malware effectively. The granular control over applications has ensured that only authorized users can access sensitive code, thereby protecting the company's intellectual property. The centralized management provided by Check Point SmartEvent has simplified the handling of requests from all company locations and made changes as simple as drag and drop. This has not only improved management efficiency but also reduced the risk of human error. The company is now considering adding Check Point SandBlast Agent with Threat Emulation and Forensics to provide another layer of protection on company endpoints.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Stopped threats that otherwise would have not been discovered
  • Gained consistent end-to-end protection across all company locations
  • Saved hours of time through automation and centralized visibility
