About The Customer
Christmas.com is an online platform that embodies the spirit of 'Christmas is for Sharing'. The site allows people from all over the world to connect and share through photos, wish lists, games, recipes, and free Family Pages. They also feature a high-tech Naughty List that allows users to check their behavior for the year. Despite being a well-trusted domain and serving a large number of happy visitors, Christmas.com became a target for cyber attacks during the holiday season.
The Challenge
Christmas.com, a site dedicated to sharing the joy of Christmas, was hit by several large DDoS attacks in early December, their busiest time of the year. The attacks knocked the site offline, disrupting their services and affecting their customers. The site needed a solution to shield them from the attacks and keep their services running smoothly.
The Solution
To combat the DDoS attacks, Christmas.com turned to Cloudflare, a leader in DDoS mitigation. Cloudflare's services were recommended to Alan Bailward, the lead technologist at Christmas.com, by a friend in the IT business. The setup process was quick and easy, taking only a few minutes. Once Christmas.com was behind Cloudflare, the attacks stopped immediately. In addition to DDoS mitigation, Cloudflare also provided a worldwide presence for Christmas.com. As Christmas is a global holiday, Cloudflare's CDN ensured that the site was safe and fast for customers all over the world.
Operational Impact
  • Christmas.com was able to stay online during their busiest time of the year, despite being targeted by several large DDoS attacks.
  • The site was able to provide a safe and fast service to their customers all over the world, thanks to Cloudflare's worldwide presence and CDN.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Christmas.com experienced a 12x increase in traffic during the latest DDoS attack, which was successfully absorbed by Cloudflare.
