About The Customer
JCB is a pioneer in the credit card business in Japan. It was founded in 1961 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011. Being an established and the oldest Japanese credit card company, it has entered into a new phase of global expansion. The brand name “JCB” has a strong presence not only in Japan, but also across the globe. Asia is experiencing an increase in travel and overseas business trips of JCB card members, but it had been challenging to attend to the members’ overseas needs. Additionally there was demand to focus on the improvement of local services such as local card issuances and supporting the expansion of partner companies. JCB’s business model in China takes the form of B2B businesses with the local financial institutions who would then onward offer JCB’s services to their customers.
The Challenge
JCB, a pioneer in the credit card business in Japan, was facing challenges with internet latency and low availability that impacted their web content delivery to China. The sudden termination of their China web server infrastructure by the local ISP was a painful learning experience for them. They considered a policy change swiftly. There was a risk that a similar situation would occur if they worked with another similar ISP in China. As such, they decided to set up their web server in Japan to serve the China market while still having the web speed and stability of content delivery as a key area of consideration.
The Solution
To address any gaps in providing their content from their Japan web server to China users, JCB adopted both KDDI’s 'Content Acceleration' for cache delivery and the 'China Acceleration' service to enhance delivery speeds to China. Cacheable static content such as images and video are replicated in edge servers. 160+ edge servers are currently deployed around the world. This allows end-users to retrieve data from the nearest edge server to their location, thus eliminating the need to fetch data from the web server back in Japan. Non-cacheable dynamic and interactive content can also be accelerated. High speed performance is achieved by optimising the Internet middle mile. Acceleration of dynamic content in China is also achieved through the 'China Acceleration' service.
Operational Impact
  • Expanded delivery platforms in more than 26 areas in Mainland of China
  • Leveraging edge servers that are distributed in China to optimise communication protocol
  • Rapid server relocation and stable operation of the server
Quantitative Benefit
  • Card members 84.5 million
