About The Customer
The customers in this case are audio professionals, content creators, and post-production facilities around the globe. These professionals are familiar with Pro Tools and Apple products, and they needed a solution that would allow them to integrate the new Dolby Atmos sound format into their projects without changing their existing workflows. They required a tool that would enable them to creatively place and move sound anywhere, providing an enhanced audio experience for their audiences. The customers also include filmmakers who have used Dolby Atmos in some of the highest profile films of the past several years.
The Challenge
The challenge was to provide an easy way for audio professionals to integrate Dolby Atmos into their projects without changing their existing workflows. Dolby Atmos, a new sound format, needed to be introduced in a manner that would allow sound experts to creatively place and move sound anywhere. The integration had to be seamless and compatible with Pro Tools and Apple products, which are widely used by content creators globally. The solution had to be simple enough to enable rapid adoption among stakeholders in the cinema industry.
The Solution
Avid collaborated with Dolby to integrate Dolby Atmos directly into the Pro Tools workflow as an AAX plugin. The Dolby Atmos Panner plugin works in concert with Pro Tools and Dolby’s outboard Rendering and Mastering Unit (RMU), which provides the rendering engine for the mix stage, tools for room configuration, management, and print mastering. Audio mixers can access the Panner in Pro Tools, control up to 128 simultaneous audio objects, and creatively place and move sound everywhere. The RMU can drive up to 64 discrete speaker feeds, enabling unprecedented sound placement control and movement anywhere in the movie theater. For post houses with Pro Tools 11, audio mixers can record and automate audio stems simultaneously on the same channel using the Dolby Atmos Panner, saving significant time.
Operational Impact
  • The integration of Dolby Atmos into the Pro Tools workflow has resulted in an efficient workflow, seamless interoperation, and a dynamic audio experience for filmmakers and audio professionals. The Dolby Atmos Panner plugin allows audio mixers to control up to 128 simultaneous audio objects and place and move sound anywhere, providing unprecedented sound placement control. The solution has been adopted rapidly in the cinema industry, with Dolby Atmos being used in some of the highest profile films of recent years. The solution has also been adopted by post-production facilities around the globe, further expanding the reach and impact of Dolby Atmos.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Within one year of launch, over 40 titles globally have featured or will be released with Dolby Atmos sound.
  • Approximately 200 screens globally have installed Dolby Atmos systems worldwide.
  • Over 20 post-production facilities around the globe are equipped with the Pro Tools/Dolby Atmos workflow.
