Instituto Policlínico La Rosaleda is one of the best healthcare centers in northwest Spain. Located at 1 Calle Santiago León de Caracas in Santiago de Compostela, the center employs 225 staff who strive daily to provide high-quality medical care and bring comfort to their patients. Over the past few years, the staff at La Rosaleda has equipped the hospital with the latest resources and leading-edge technology for diagnosis and treatment in all specialties. The center is active in various initiatives in the area of social responsibility with many other hospital groups, both in Spain and abroad. In the past year, it has posted profits of €600,000 and turnover of €16 million.
The Challenge
Instituto Policlínico La Rosaleda, one of the leading healthcare centres in northwest Spain, was facing challenges in managing and analyzing the vast amount of data generated in the hospital. The hospital had a powerful Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in character mode in AS400, containing a large number of documents that were difficult to analyze, with a small IT department. The process of obtaining any kind of information was complicated and the hospital was excessively dependent on the IT department, which lacked the resources to deal with all the demands being made. The hospital needed a solution that could make information available quickly and consistently without reliance on the IT department, enabling rapid decision making.
The Solution
La Rosaleda opted for QlikView business intelligence (BI) software to analyze the huge amount of data generated in the hospital. The application was rolled out at its head office in the areas of Finance, Admissions, Invoicing, Outpatient Services, and Casualty. QlikView Server was started up and quickly and easily integrated 5GB of data from different sources, such as an AHM USP in an AS400 environment and other external Excel spreadsheet data. With QlikView, performance indicators for invoicing, the profitability of services, professional and guarantor, and average patient stay, among others, can be measured. Users no longer have to search around the system for the data they need, ensuring rapid decision-making.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
