About The Customer
Blessing Health is an integrated health system that includes two hospitals, a physician group, an accredited college of nursing and health sciences, a network of medical specialty businesses, and a charitable foundation. With 161 locations in 14 facilities across Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri, it is the largest and most advanced medical center in a 100-mile radius. The organization's facilities team is responsible for managing a large, complex environment every day, ensuring the smooth operation of all systems and maintaining patient and staff safety. Blessing Health has been an AkitaBox client since 2018.
The Challenge
Blessing Health, a major regional medical provider with over 160 locations across multiple buildings, was struggling with the complexity of managing their asset relationships. The facilities team had to navigate a large, intricate environment daily, keeping track of how HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other systems interconnected at each location. This was crucial for quick response to maintenance needs, preventing unintentional impacts to connected assets, ensuring patient and staff safety, and keeping all facilities fully operational. The organization's portfolio included several older buildings, which added to the complexity. The team had to rely on wordy descriptions to explain asset relationships and locations, which was not efficient or effective. After a bitter cold snap caused four sprinkler heads to break in just three weeks, it became clear that immediate access to room-asset relationship information was critical. An attempt to integrate a mapping tool with their existing facility management software proved unsuccessful, as the two systems couldn't fully integrate, leading to dual work and reluctance to use the tools.
The Solution
Blessing Health turned to AkitaBox, an all-in-one solution for facility management that seamlessly incorporated mapping and asset relationships. AkitaBox, designed to collect, organize, and present facilities data, could display complex asset relationships in a meaningful, easy-to-understand way. Each asset was mapped or digitally 'pinned' onto the facilities' digital floor plans. Clicking an asset pin would bring up a list of all the other assets and rooms that particular asset impacts or is impacted by. Blessing Health worked with a mechanical engineering firm to map out their building systems and asset relationships in AkitaBox. Each floor now has separate maps for every major building system, showing the location of any pipes, valves, life-safety, and other assets. Every asset is also associated with any other assets or rooms it has an impact on. The maps can be easily updated as the facilities change over time, thanks to AkitaBox’s bulk editing feature.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of AkitaBox has transformed the way Blessing Health manages its facilities. The platform has eliminated confusion and uncertainty surrounding asset relationships, providing immediate access to asset relationship information from anywhere. This has resulted in faster response times to reactive situations. The Blessing facilities team now works from one, user-friendly system, which has increased platform usage and learning. Furthermore, the organization can now take a more proactive approach to its facilities management, reducing the number of call-backs and helping prevent reactive issues like broken sprinkler heads. The ability to easily update the maps as the facilities change over time has also been a significant operational benefit.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 161 locations in 14 facilities successfully managed
  • All room and asset relationships mapped onto current floor plans
  • Immediate access to asset relationship information from anywhere
