About The Customer
The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) is a state agency created in 1937 to meet U.S. mandates for federal-state partnerships that serve the general public. The agency employs a staff of approximately 1,500 employees who are tasked with helping unemployed citizens find gainful work. In addition to offering training and support services to unemployed Georgia citizens, the Department of Labor helps employers recruit qualified personnel and tracks a wide variety of labor statistics for state and federal agencies. Based in Atlanta, GDOL has a large base of citizens under its purview, with as many as 500,000 people enlisting its employment services each year.
The Challenge
The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) was tasked with helping unemployed citizens find gainful work. This involved offering training and support services to unemployed Georgia citizens, helping employers recruit qualified personnel, and tracking a wide variety of labor statistics for state and federal agencies. The department had to manage information for as many as 500,000 job seekers annually, connecting workers with employers and helping managers, analysts, legislators, and economists understand continually shifting labor trends. This generated a huge amount of data, which needed to be rolled up into portals that reveal the status of the state’s workforce. The department faced the challenge of tracking metrics related to employment services for job seekers and employers throughout the state, as well as delivering labor exchange statistics to federal and state agencies.
The Solution
The GDOL implemented a Business Intelligence (BI) environment using WebFOCUS and ReportCaster from Information Builders. This solution was able to access raw data from a variety of sources including mainframe systems, DB2 databases, and SQL Server databases and combine it into parameterized reports and interactive displays. WebFOCUS was used to create and distribute hundreds of monthly reports, with user-defined parameters that enabled people to find exactly what they needed. The system also used WebFOCUS ReportCaster to schedule and automatically broadcast reports to managers at 46 independent career centers throughout the state. The solution also included data visualization features, allowing users to easily interpret reports at a glance.
Operational Impact
  • WebFOCUS manages information for as many as 500,000 job seekers annually, connecting workers with employers and helping managers, analysts, legislators, and economists understand continually shifting labor trends.
  • WebFOCUS generates user-friendly reports that business people throughout the organization can access themselves.
  • WebFOCUS is intuitive for business users, enabling them to access standard reports and drill down, filter the data, and easily get what they need to do their jobs.
  • WebFOCUS ReportCaster is used to schedule and automatically broadcast reports to managers at 46 independent career centers throughout the state, saving them time and minimizing effort formerly devoted to manually running reports each day, week, and month.
