The Challenge
Informa plc, a multinational publishing, conference, and information management company, was facing a challenge with its massive amount of data. The company generates a large amount of data through its various divisions, including Global Events, Academic Publishing, and Business Intelligence. The database serves a global audience and contains 13 million corporate addresses and about 35 million personal records. However, every country has its own way of listing addresses, zip codes, locations, street numbers, and other identifying information. This led to a problem of data inconsistency and duplication. The quality of the information could vary by source, and over time information ages and loses its relevance. Problems arise if the data is not periodically updated or removed.
The Solution
To address the challenge of data inconsistency and duplication, Informa selected the iWay Data Quality Server (DQS) from Information Builders. With iWay DQS, Informa was able to build a centralized repository of data about clients, prospects, and customer relations from subsidiaries worldwide, which can be leveraged to support the company’s marketing efforts. iWay DQS includes specialized business rules and localized dictionaries that analyze this content, apply cleansing rules, and validate the data against specified dictionaries. Informa also installed the iWay Data Steward Portal, a powerful data governance tool that complements DQS by identifying and cleansing corrupt, invalid, and incomplete data. The Data Steward Portal provides a complete, unhindered view of data quality issues at all times. For Informa, it means improved customer identification processes with no duplication. iWay’s advanced algorithms automatically examine the database for potential duplicates based on slight variations in, for example, name or location. iWay DQS detects duplicates with a high degree of certainty. Data records are automatically merged with a match of 95 percent or more.
Operational Impact
  • Informa now has more accurate client profiles and more efficient data management procedures.
  • The company can enforce comprehensive data governance policies.
  • Higher-quality client data has led to increased customer satisfaction.
  • More efficient marketing campaigns have been achieved.
  • The data quality project has been implemented in stages beginning with the European and Far East sectors, which are complete. Brazil and America will follow.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Increase in revenue due to more successful up-sell and cross-sell activities.
