About The Customer
The M Group Architects & Interior Architects is a 17-person firm led by Freedman, specializing in office building architecture and interiors. The firm caters to building owners, corporate and industrial clients, and government contractors and agencies. Their team comprises 10 architects, five interior designers, and a few administrators. The firm's projects range from small tenant spaces to large building complexes. They emphasize collaboration, communication, and a 'Zero Ego' approach, focusing on client desires and creating spaces that work for them. The firm has a reputation for delivering design excellence and creating dynamic environments through hands-on learning and troubleshooting.
The Challenge
The M Group Architects & Interior Architects faced the challenge of creating dynamic, functional, and aesthetically pleasing office environments for their clients. They needed to ensure that their designs not only met the clients' aesthetic preferences but also supported their operational needs and corporate culture. For instance, KPMG LLP required a new office space that adhered to their nationwide standards while enhancing the work environment for their employees. Similarly, Thompson Hospitality sought a grand entrance for their new office space to reinforce their corporate identity and create a lasting first impression. These projects required careful collaboration with various stakeholders and the integration of advanced technologies to achieve the desired outcomes.
The Solution
The M Group utilized Vectorworks Architect software to develop and communicate their designs effectively. For KPMG LLP, they designed a full-floor suite in Pittsburgh’s BNY Mellon Bank Building, incorporating KPMG’s nationwide space and site standards. The design included shared workspace management systems, advanced phone technology, and audio/visual upgrades. The project also aimed for LEED Silver accreditation with features like occupancy sensors, ENERGY STAR-rated equipment, and wind power offset. For Thompson Hospitality, M Group created a new entry façade with a 23-foot-tall atrium and a two-story waterfall. They collaborated with structural and mechanical engineering partners to ensure the design's feasibility. The project also included a large boardroom, custom millwork, and glass-front offices. M Group relied on Vectorworks software’s workgroup referencing capabilities to manage tasks and enable team collaboration, ensuring timely project completion.
Operational Impact
  • M Group's collaborative approach and use of advanced design software allowed them to meet client expectations and create functional, aesthetically pleasing office spaces.
  • The firm’s 'Zero Ego' approach ensured that client desires were prioritized, resulting in high customer satisfaction.

  • The use of Vectorworks software enabled efficient project management and collaboration, ensuring timely completion of complex projects.
Quantitative Benefit
  • More than 90% of office seats in KPMG’s new space enjoy views of significant landmarks.
  • The KPMG project achieved LEED Silver accreditation.
  • Over 20% of project materials for KPMG were recycled, and more than 20% were sourced within 500 miles of the building.
  • KPMG’s new office space offset all power consumption for the first two years of a 10-year lease through wind power.
