About The Customer
Founded in 1994, Duy Tan University (DTU) is in Da Nang, Vietnam. The university is the first and largest private, multidisciplinary institution in Central Vietnam. DTU employs approximately 800 administrative staff and has around 20,000 students. The university prides itself on the fact that 100 percent of graduates who majored in software technology find employment immediately upon graduation. Therefore, it is extremely important for the university to have cutting-edge technology in classrooms so that students are marketable in the IT industry.
The Challenge
Duy Tan University (DTU) in Da Nang, Vietnam, needed to incorporate additional cutting-edge technology in classrooms to help students become more marketable in the IT industry. The university prides itself on the fact that 100 percent of graduates who majored in software technology find employment immediately upon graduation. Therefore, it is extremely important for the university to have cutting-edge technology in classrooms so that students are marketable in the IT industry. Man Nguyen Duc, dean of the DTU International School, explains that students are better able to acquire jobs when they have training and knowledge about products from well-known technology companies.
The Solution
The IBM Academic Initiative program attracted DTU because it offers growth opportunities to students and faculty. Since 2010, DTU has used various IBM technology products in software engineering and information system management curriculums to teach data and business analysis, software and system testing, and big data. In 2012, DTU’s mobile application development course added IBM MobileFirst® Platform (formerly IBM Worklight®) software to its technology resources. This software helps extend information to mobile devices. Professors encourage students to use the software for senior projects, which require scholars to build multiplatform apps, because the MobileFirst offering provides hands-on experience with enterprise-level mobile application development technology.
Operational Impact
  • The IBM Academic Initiative program enhances students’ educational experiences by providing updates on new technologies, free software trials and opportunities to join IBM training courses.
  • Professors encourage students to use the software for senior projects, which require scholars to build multiplatform apps, because the MobileFirst offering provides hands-on experience with enterprise-level mobile application development technology.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Approximately 120 students have taken the mobile application development course since it began offering firsthand experience with MobileFirst Platform software.
  • Many of these scholars have also received certifications the MobileFirst software and other IBM technologies.
