About The Customer
The University of South Australia (UniSA) is a public university based in Adelaide, South Australia. Founded in 1991, the university offers more than 400 degree programs across a wide range of subjects. UniSA operates four campuses and is committed to innovation and excellence in education. The university was looking for a way to involve its community in shaping its long-term strategic plan.
The Challenge
The University of South Australia (UniSA) was looking for a way to gather innovative ideas from the university community to help shape its long-term strategic plan. The university wanted to involve as many members of the community as possible in this process. The challenge was to find a platform that could facilitate this large-scale collaboration and idea generation.
The Solution
UniSA chose to use IBM Jam technology to facilitate a virtual roundtable called UniJam. This was the first time a university had used this technology for such a purpose. The multi-day Jam event allowed UniSA to capture the priorities of all participants through comments and voting on topics crucial to helping UniSA maintain its position as an innovation leader. This focused approach to priority-setting enabled UniSA to create 'Crossing the Horizon,' a 5-year plan that includes both specific and broad-reaching action items to bring the university closer to its Horizon 2020 goals.
Operational Impact
  • UniSA was able to involve more than 8,000 participants from across the globe in the UniJam event.
  • The university was able to capture the priorities of all participants through comments and voting on crucial topics.
  • The focused approach to priority-setting allowed UniSA to immediately create a 5-year plan that provides both specific and broad-reaching action items.
Quantitative Benefit
  • UniSA derived nearly 60 percent of the strategic actions in its 5-year plan directly from the UniJam project results.
