About The Customer
Neste is an innovative oil and gas company headquartered in Finland, known for its sustainability efforts. With a workforce of over 5,000 employees, the company operates various business units, each with its own systems, limitations, and supply chain issues. Neste is a world leader in renewable diesel, generating half of its revenue from this segment. The company's supplier network is highly complex, involving diverse sources of additional feedstock. Neste's logistics processes are particularly challenging, requiring effective visualization and analysis of transactional data to manage and master them. The company's rapid growth in renewable diesel adds to the complexity, making it essential to improve process focus and enhance customer delivery capabilities.
The Challenge
Neste, a Finnish oil and gas company, faced significant challenges in managing its complex supplier network and logistics processes. With over 5,000 employees and various business units, the company struggled to maintain transparency and efficiency in its operations. The procurement process, though simple within the company, became complicated due to the diverse sources of additional feedstock. The company's rapid growth, especially in renewable diesel, further exacerbated these challenges. Neste aimed to enhance customer value by improving delivery capabilities, which required a deep understanding of cross-functional process chains and better coordination among departments. The company needed to overcome these hurdles to achieve operational excellence and continuous process improvement.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Neste embarked on a journey to improve its business process management capabilities. The company created a corporate-wide business process maturity framework, driven by the Business Process Leadership (BPL) team. This team, consisting of business process managers and analysts, played a central role in ensuring continuous improvement in process management across different functional teams. Neste also implemented a new SAP HANA landscape to provide a basis for process analytics. In late 2016, the company selected Celonis as its process mining software, which seamlessly integrated with the SAP environment. Celonis Process Mining enabled Neste to track and visualize business processes, improving transparency and fostering fact-based analytical capabilities. The software's ease of implementation, usability, and flexibility were key factors in its selection.

Remote Wellhead Monitoring
Each wellhead was equipped with various sensors and meters that needed to be monitored and controlled from a central HMI, often miles away from the assets in the field. Redundant solar and wind generators were installed at each wellhead to support the electrical needs of the pumpstations, temperature meters, cameras, and cellular modules. In addition to asset management and remote control capabilities, data logging for remote surveillance and alarm notifications was a key demand from the customer. Terra Ferma’s solution needed to be power efficient, reliable, and capable of supporting high-bandwidth data-feeds. They needed a multi-link cellular connection to a central server that sustained reliable and redundant monitoring and control of flow meters, temperature sensors, power supply, and event-logging; including video and image files. This open-standard network needed to interface with the existing SCADA and proprietary network management software.

Refinery Saves Over $700,000 with Smart Wireless
One of the largest petroleum refineries in the world is equipped to refine various types of crude oil and manufacture various grades of fuel from motor gasoline to Aviation Turbine Fuel. Due to wear and tear, eight hydrogen valves in each refinery were leaking, and each cost $1800 per ton of hydrogen vented. The plant also had leakage on nearly 30 flare control hydrocarbon valves. The refinery wanted a continuous, online monitoring system that could catch leaks early, minimize hydrogen and hydrocarbon production losses, and improve safety for maintenance.
