About The Customer
The Houston Police Department is the law enforcement agency for the city of Houston, the largest city in the state of Texas, and home to more than 2.1 million people. The department comprises 5,200 sworn officers and 1,300 civilian employees who are devoted to enhancing the quality of life for residents by working cooperatively with the public to prevent crime, enforce the law, preserve the peace, and provide a safe environment. The police force is responsible for patrolling approximately 656 square miles each day.
The Challenge
The Houston Police Department, responsible for the safety of over 2.1 million people, was facing the challenge of providing instantaneous access to vital information to officers responding to incidents. The department had a data warehouse containing historic crime data, but the analysis of this data was complex and often redundant, as it was conducted using handwritten SQL requests or complex Microsoft Access queries. The department wanted to create a real-time crime center (RTCC) to collect critical data and push it directly to officers via their mobile devices. They also wanted to deploy a dashboard that allows chiefs and captains to better manage their districts.
The Solution
The Houston Police Department partnered with Information Builders to create a real-time crime center (RTCC), powered by business intelligence (BI) and integration technologies. The RTCC is designed to make critical information – derived from crime, jail booking, probation, and other databases – immediately available to officers responding to calls. The department also deployed a management dashboard for tracking crime statistics and trends. Captains and chiefs use the dashboard to review crime by type, day, or shift, as well as by district or beat. The department designed, built, and deployed an environment for real-time crime reporting and event analytics with the help of Information Builders’ Professional Services team. The environment comprises pre-built iWay Software integration components from Information Builders, which aid in accessing, matching, and cleansing data from back-end systems. It also includes WebFOCUS, complete with enterprise search and location intelligence capabilities for presenting that data to stakeholders.

Smart City Public Safety
Amyx+ worked with a local government authority to develop an Internet of Things-enabled public safety strategy. In the current state, vigilance meant manually scanning through potentially hundreds of analog surveillance videos feeds. Manual, costly and ineffective, the local agency desired to transition from analog to digital CCTV, apply computer vision and other technologies to automatically detect potential crime in progress, expedite and streamline emergency calls and integrate with personal wearables to ensure the safety of their citizens.
