About The Customer
The customer is a hospital system located in the Southeastern United States. The hospital system employs approximately 7,000 employees. The hospital was using AT&T Toggle as their mobile security solution, but it became obsolete after Google acquired the source company Divide. The hospital was in the process of migrating to Office 365 and needed a solution that could support this migration. The hospital's compliance team was looking for a replacement solution that was secure, easy to use, and transparent to users.
The Challenge
The hospital system, located in the Southeastern United States, was in need of a solution for HIPAA compliance on mobile devices. The Department of Health and Human Services reports that 70% of data breaches in healthcare are the result of lost or stolen devices. The hospital's incumbent mobile security solution, AT&T Toggle, was made obsolete after Google acquired the source company Divide. The hospital's compliance team wanted a replacement that was secure, easy to use, and transparent to users. They were particularly wary of solutions that required software on BYOD. A second criterion for the solution was the ability to support migration to Office 365, which was looming in the near term.
The Solution
The hospital's compliance team tested Bitglass, MobileIron, and AirWatch on the same user group of executives. Bitglass ranked highest with both the users and the compliance team. Bitglass enables complete audit of all data flowing to any BYO device. It has configurable PHI data patterns for alerts, plus advanced PHI patterns to control the bulk transfer of PHI. It can selectively wipe hospital data, enforce device PIN and encryption, block cloud-enabled rogue email clients, and more. All of these features are available with zero software installed on mobile devices. The Bitglass solution requires no invasive agents and was easy for the hospital to deploy to achieve real-time inline data protection on any device.
Operational Impact
  • The hospital was able to achieve real-time inline data protection on any device.
  • The Bitglass solution was easy to deploy.
  • The solution requires no invasive agents.
  • The solution can selectively wipe hospital data, enforce device PIN and encryption, and block cloud-enabled rogue email clients.
