About The Customer
The customer is a leader in high-tech manufacturing of components for mobile, video games, and supercomputing applications. The company has a global presence with over 10,000 employees. The company has recently undergone a shift internally from discouraging the use of cloud apps to enabling it. As part of that process, the CIO tasked a small team with the task of identifying a small number of popular business apps to sanction. Since a large swath of the company was already using Google Apps, particularly Google Drive for storage and collaboration, Google Apps for Work was on the short list.
The Challenge
The high-tech manufacturing company was undergoing a shift from discouraging the use of cloud apps to enabling it. As part of this process, Google Apps for Work was shortlisted for sanctioning since a large part of the company was already using it, particularly Google Drive for storage and collaboration. However, IT needed the ability to protect sensitive content that was being moved into Google Drive. They wanted to monitor what is there, understand how it is being used and shared, and take action only if users are engaging in risky behavior. They also needed to report to the company’s executive management, board of directors, and audit committee about cloud usage and risk. Additionally, IT wanted to identify and monitor activity in unsanctioned apps that may be redundant with the sanctioned list, and use those findings to consolidate usage onto the sanctioned apps, including Google Apps for Work.
The Solution
The customer used Netskope for Google Apps to automatically discover content within their corporate sanctioned Google Drive. They developed a handful of custom DLP profiles using the Netskope policy wizard, including “IP” and “proprietary and confidential.” After discovering sensitive content against the above profiles, the customer was able to drill down, see who the content owners were, and understand sharing status of the content. They were also able to restrict access as well as download several documents for later review by legal. They also used Netskope to notify content owners of the actions they had taken to create process and policy transparency. Besides getting visibility into the content in their sanctioned Google Apps for Work deployment, the customer is also using Netskope to discover all of the apps that are running in their organization and assess those apps’ risk.
