Benny Rietveld, the bassist and music director for Santana, faced this challenge in his work with the band and other legendary musicians. The musicians he worked with had different skillsets when it came to reading music, and not all of them had classical training. This meant that he had to create music charts that were tailored to each musician's unique needs and abilities. Furthermore, the musicians he worked with were part of various ensembles, which required different types of music charts and individual parts. This situation called for a music notation program that was flexible and could cater to the diverse needs of the musicians.
The Solution
Benny Rietveld found the solution in Sibelius Ultimate, a music notation software that he used for writing, arranging, and publishing music to be played by Santana and other musicians he worked with. Sibelius Ultimate offered the flexibility to create various types of charts and individual parts, catering to the diverse needs of the musicians. It allowed Benny to provide a level of detail in his music for each band member, using cue notes and lyrics where necessary. The software also allowed him to create different types of charts for the players, incorporating traditional music elements for classically-trained players. Benny also used a simple, portable setup for the transcribing process, which included a Vox player and a Korg microKEY controller. This setup made it easy for him to travel and capture ideas quickly.
