About The Customer
Fintonic is a personal financial planning and mobile banking service that provides users with insurance, investments, and a proprietary credit score (Finscore). Founded in Spain, they have enjoyed massive growth; they now have more than 700,000 users and are focused on expanding their offerings into Chile and Mexico. As part of this expansion, they’ve chosen to migrate to a microservices architecture with Kubernetes to help increase development velocity. In 2018, Fintonic doubled the number of users on their platform, tripled their employees, began their expansion into Chile, and grew to six lines of business.
The Challenge
Fintonic, a personal financial planning and mobile banking service, was experiencing rapid growth and expansion into new markets. They adopted a microservices-based architecture driven with Kubernetes to facilitate their global expansion. However, with their existing monitoring tools, it took time to onboard new engineers as they needed to learn a specialized query language to manually correlate logs across multiple tools. Teams struggled with alert coverage and prioritization since their monitoring tools could not target alerts based on tags. As they grew quickly, onboarding new engineers became difficult with their incumbent monitoring tools. They needed to adopt a stateless architecture with Kubernetes, Terraform, and Ansible to be able to replicate what they had built for Spain in Chile and Mexico.
The Solution
Fintonic decided to adopt Datadog, a platform that was easy to use, proven for Kubernetes, and that brought all their monitoring data together in one platform. Datadog’s intuitive interface makes it possible for Fintonic to onboard new engineers in a few days. And Datadog seamlessly integrates with Kubernetes, enabling Fintonic to automatically correlate alerts, events, metrics, and logs to track issues across their ephemeral services, hosts, and containers. Fintonic uses Datadog tags to create scalable alerts specific to geographic markets, application metrics, metric anomalies, and log events. Through Datadog, Fintonic has been able to realize the benefits of Kubernetes and expand into Mexico and Chile smoothly.
Operational Impact
  • Unified Solution: Six business teams across Fintonic use customized Datadog dashboards to monitor their key services.
  • Time to Value: With Datadog’s intuitive interface, new Fintonic engineers can onboard in a few days.
  • Reduced MTTR: Fintonic leveraged Datadog to eliminate manual correlation among multiple tools, helping them identify and resolve issues faster.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Fintonic doubled the number of users on their platform in 2018.
  • Fintonic tripled their employees in 2018.
  • Fintonic expanded into Chile and Mexico.
