About The Customer
GreenFlex is a leading European company specializing in environmental management services, energy efficiency, and environmental impact management. The company's mission is to help its customers move towards more sustainable development, decarbonization, and energy efficiency. To achieve this, GreenFlex gathers energy consumption data from its customers and leverages machine learning to identify any consumption anomalies. The company then helps customers devise energy strategies that are best suited to their needs. As the volume of data the company gathers and analyzes has grown exponentially over the years, GreenFlex has sought to simplify the way it manages and governs the data it collects, making it easily and securely accessible for various use cases.
The Challenge
GreenFlex, a European leader in environmental management services, energy efficiency, and environmental impact management, was facing a significant challenge in managing and governing the vast amount of data it was collecting. The company gathers energy consumption data from its customers and uses machine learning to identify consumption anomalies and devise energy strategies. However, as the volume of data grew exponentially, GreenFlex needed a simplified way to manage and govern this data. The company needed to make the data easily and securely accessible for data exploration, business intelligence, and machine learning use cases. Additionally, GreenFlex was maintaining three unconnected workspaces for development, staging, and production workloads, leading to complications in dealing with security and access controls over the tables in each workspace. This design also led to issues with data availability across these workspaces.
The Solution
GreenFlex turned to the Databricks Lakehouse Platform to modernize its data infrastructure and leverage terabytes of energy consumption data to devise data-driven energy optimization strategies. The company used the Unity Catalog feature of the platform to simplify access management by providing a single pane of glass to manage access permissions using familiar and standardized SQL. With a single Unity Catalog metastore for all their workspaces, GreenFlex data administrators could define access policies once at the account level and enforce those policies across the workspaces. This design simplified data management, as the company no longer needed to manage separate AWS S3 buckets for each workspace. With centralized audit controls, GreenFlex data administrators could track usage of the data across workspaces and be compliance and audit ready. The Unity Catalog also streamlined data availability, accelerating the company’s ability to onboard new employees and grant access to data.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Databricks Lakehouse Platform and Unity Catalog has brought significant operational benefits to GreenFlex. The company has been able to simplify data access management, streamline data availability, and accelerate the onboarding of new employees. The solution has also freed up time for GreenFlex data engineers and data scientists to focus on value-added tasks such as experimenting with data or developing new solutions. Furthermore, GreenFlex developers can now create tables from new data and manage permissions more quickly, simplifying data operations. The company can now fully comprehend and perform permissions tasks in minutes, allowing it to focus more on helping its customers reduce energy use and improve sustainability.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Accelerated onboarding of new team members from days to a few minutes
  • Centralized data governance and access management, eliminating the need for separate AWS S3 buckets for each workspace
  • Simplified access management and audit controls, improving compliance readiness
