About The Customer
First Great Western is a major train operator in the United Kingdom. They operate high speed, commuter, regional and branch line train services across the former Wessex Trains, First Great Western Link and First Great Western routes. Their vision is to provide their customers and communities with travel that is safe, reliable and enjoyable. They are committed to improving their services and ensuring the safety of their passengers, which is why they sought a solution to the challenge of ensuring passenger safety when alighting the train at shorter platforms.
The Challenge
First Great Western operates high speed, commuter, regional and branch line train services across the former Wessex Trains, First Great Western Link and First Great Western routes. Their vision is to provide their customers and communities with travel that is safe, reliable and enjoyable. However, they faced a challenge in ensuring passenger safety when alighting the train at shorter platforms. They needed a selective opening device for their high-speed trains that would allow the Train Manager to control the automatic locking and unlocking device for the train doors.
The Solution
dormakaba was able to provide the solution in the shape of the Kaba 20 system. This system allows the Train Manager to control the automatic locking and unlocking device for the train doors. The Train Manager can stand at the last car level with the end of the platform and by simply inserting their Kaba key into the Kaba key switch they can prevent the carriage doors beyond the platform unlocking automatically with the rest of the train. The Kaba 20 system is operated by the unique smooth Kaba dimpled key, being strong, durable and reversible and available with over 100 million key codes. dormakaba switchlocks can be included in Master Keyed systems with other products such as camlocks, door locks and padlocks to provide a high level of organisational control, with users required only to carry one key.
Operational Impact
  • The system is a success due to its efficiency and simplicity.
  • The keys are strictly controlled at dormakaba’s Central Office in Devon ensuring that they are managed by First Great Western personnel and are only issued to authorised First Great Western staff.
  • This program will also help First Great Western to run longer trains on alternate service routes.
